Veterans, ever wondered how your leadership skills transfer to civilian roles? Let me tell you – I receive 4-5 calls weekly seeking the unique skills you possess. Don't underestimate your value in the private sector. To the question of minimum tenure for a leader to be successful. Please find the results below. It's true it does depend, on the individual, the organisation, the context, etc. That said, I agree 12 months (4%) is unrealistic and 18 months (9%) also unlikely, to see the leader overcome the learning curve, build relationships and start to really produce results from their strategy. Interesting that 2 years and 3 years are tied at 43% each. My view is that 2 years would arguably be the minimum tenure for an executive role. However 3 seems objectively more realistic to really see the results & impact of their performance in the role. Appreciate your thoughts. #aerospace #aviation

Aviation Leader | 11 Years in Operational Efficiency, Strategic Planning, Team Leadership & HR | USAF Veteran | Flexibility is Key to Airpower – Stay Liquid!
Story Time... On this day, 5 years ago, my recruiting office supervisor called me into the office: “Listen, Degster, I’m out for a week. I’m headed to NC to enjoy some family time and food. You’re in charge of the recruiters. Deuces!” Me: “Wait… sir, I’m just an E4. How am I supposed to manage a bunch of E6s who outrank me by two levels? C’mon man...” MSgt: “Didn’t you say you’ve been managing an airport operation in your civilian career? You’re good at what you do, right? (smirk) Show me what you’ve got.” That was it—no escape. To my surprise, the team was ready to follow me—except for one who just had to push the boundaries (pretty sure it was all planned). But even that taught me a lot about leadership and patience when you're leading people you don’t outrank. Imagine being a supervisor and your VP tells you the Directors will report to you for a week while they’re out. 😲 It was a trial by fire, but I grew in ways I didn’t expect. The thing that really stuck with me? While I had managed chiefs of police, SWAT officers, and Lieutenants working ready reserve for me in my civilian role at the airlines, this was different. In the military, rank is everything. Being trusted at that level? It opened my eyes to the potential someone else saw in me, beyond my rank. Since that day, I’ve carried that lesson with me, and it transformed my approach to leadership and performance. I understood something essential. Moral of the story: Take that eager employee or teammate of yours and challenge them. Put them in a position where they’re a little uncomfortable. Expose them to opportunities beyond what they see for themselves. They might stumble, but with your support, they’ll rise. More importantly, they’ll feel seen, empowered, and valued. That’s how you grow leaders. Happy Tuesday, professionals of LinkedIn! #leadership #challenge #growth

'Deep Insights #10 - Submariners have an ability to absorb, collate and process large volumes of information to form 3D situational awareness' In Submarines: Having a detailed 3D picture of what is going on around the submarine is absolutely vital. This is both from a boat safety perspective, but also knowing where the threats are, be they hostile, friendly or neutral. Therefore lots of time and effort is spent building the tactical picture and fusing the data from all sensors so that there is always tactical situational awareness to inform decision-making. But on a personal level, submariners have what is called a 'control room ear'. This is the ability to pick up snippets of information using peripheral hearing from a variety of sources, and be able to make sense of it. In Business: Knowing what your main competitors are involved with is key to success in business. Intel gathering in this space allows the business to pre-emptively react to ensure that you are always first to market and therefore retain the competitive edge. Networking and fusing data from isolated conversations, perhaps that are held in the periphery of conferences, in hotel foyers/bars, or wherever professionals congregate can be extremely useful. In your workplace, listening in to the mood music generated by your team could be all it takes to intervene to avert unrest by replacing rumour, gossip and scuttlebutt with facts. ♻️ Reshare if you enjoyed reading this. 📌 Join other leaders by subscribing to my newsletter: https://buff.ly/3x7Dr6i #leaders #leadership #teambuilding #leadershipdevelopment #engineers

Innovative Aerospace Leader | Space Technology, Commercial Innovation, and Strategic Alliances | Driving Growth in Space Exploration
Reflecting on the rapid changes and poor decisions seen this past year, it's clear that sustainability in leadership requires more than just a vision—it demands accountability, genuine experience, and a deep commitment to the long-term well-being of all stakeholders. Are we nurturing leaders who prioritize quick wins over lasting impact? The future of this industry hinges on this answer.
This past year has just amazed me (specifically in aerospace/aviation), with so many companies and boards shuffling around their senior management every 6-18 months, rebranding unprofitable products and service offerings, creating ridiculous positions and/or hiring totally unqualified persons, then months later begin discounting or offering deep concessions which basically tell me you’re 1) close to running out of money 2) prepaid services probably won’t be delivered 3) fire sale or closing the doors is pretty probable The reckless leadership and unbelievably frivolous spending so many companies in this industry are guilty of, truly makes me question HOW some of these CEO/CCO’s were even hired for the job! If you’ve never built or have run a company before, then you have zero idea what it feels like to write that check out of your own bank account. Be responsible at a level that you put your employees, their families, customers and shareholders first. Real leaders make sacrifices to ensure those folks are always top of mind. Do Better.
