Application of a cardiotocography monitor – NEW GUIDE The author of this fully illustrated guide is Sam Copping, Lecturer in Midwifery, University of Suffolk. The guide has undergone double-blind peer review. Cardiotocography (CTG) can be used for electronic fetal monitoring from 26 weeks’ gestation. This technology involves applying an ultrasound transducer, and another transducer called a tocograph (toco), to the woman’s (or birthing person’s) abdomen, which record the fetal heart rate and maternal uterine contractions, respectively. The CTG machine converts the monitoring data into a visual printout. CTG is widely used both antenatally and during the intrapartum period to assess fetal wellbeing, mainly in high-risk pregnancies. It screens babies to identify those who have, or are at risk of developing, acute or chronic hypoxia. This guide covers: · Antenatal and intrapartum indications for CTG monitoring. · Clinical assessment to determine the appropriate method of fetal monitoring. · Preparing the CTG machine. · Taking baseline maternal observations. · Positioning the ultrasound transducer. · CTG monitoring for multiple pregnancies. · Placing the toco. · Monitoring fetal movements. · Interpretation of an antenatal and an intrapartum CTG. · Risk assessment following CTG. #midwifery #nursing #elearning

There is no statutory registration as a sonographer available in the United Kingdom (UK) and the titles of ‘sonographer’ and ‘ultrasonographer’ are not legally protected. The majority of sonographers are statutorily registered with the Health and Care Professions Council or Nursing and Midwifery Council as they have a professional background as a radiographer, clinical scientist, nurse, physiotherapist or midwife that allows this, but this registration is not as a sonographer. For otherwise well-qualified and experienced sonographers, statutory registration is impossible to achieve at the present time and they have no statutory regulatory home. This can lead to problems for the sonographers themselves, for the patients and public in terms of protection and for employers when selecting staff. As a medical professional with PGD in medical ultrasound., you can be employed as a sonographer in the UK , especially for radiographers and nurses

📢 New Publication Alert: Shaping Ultrasound in Midwifery: Towards an Evidence-Based Training Framework for Enhanced Prenatal Care Exciting news for the midwifery community! Our latest research, "Shaping ultrasound in midwifery: towards an evidence-based training framework for enhanced prenatal care," has been published. This study addresses the critical need for standardized qualifications in obstetric ultrasound diagnosis, which is a cornerstone of prenatal care. 🔍 Background: With the academic advancement of the midwifery profession, it is essential to establish standardized qualifications in obstetric ultrasound. This study reviews existing curriculum designs to pave the way for an evidence-based training program. 📊 Results: Out of 29 publications included, we identified significant disparities in course concepts. Key differences were found in duration, structure, learning approaches, course content, examination methods, and target groups (practising midwives vs. midwifery students). 📈 Conclusion: There is a pressing need for the development of an evidence-based ultrasound educational program for midwives. This includes establishing comprehensive educational guidelines and defining the clinical applications of ultrasound by midwives, especially in terms of legal considerations. 🛠 Next Steps: We are calling on educators, policymakers, and practitioners to collaborate in creating a standardized, evidence-based training framework that will enhance prenatal care and support the professional development of midwives. Let's advance midwifery education and ensure that every midwife is equipped with the skills needed for high-quality prenatal care. 🌟 Agnes Franziska Wittek #MidwiferyEducation #ObstetricUltrasound #HealthcareTraining #MedicalCurriculum #UltrasoundTraining #MidwifeSonographer #PrenatalEducation #HealthcareStandards #AcademicResearch #MedicalAdvancement #UltrasoundEducation #MidwiferyInnovation #HealthcareProfessionals #PrenatalCareExcellence #StandardizedTraining #MedicalEducationReform #ClinicalTraining #HealthcareQuality #MidwiferyCare #EvidenceBasedTraining

Imagine it's 2024, and you're a midwife. You're crushing it. Your business is thriving. What did it take to get there? Here are the 4 most important things you did: 1. Anticipated your clients' needs. You noticed the shift towards more natural alternatives to traditional medicine. You educated yourself on the trend and adapted your approach accordingly, becoming the go-to midwife for holistic care. 2. Built a solid brand. You didn't just post on social media or advertise. You created a recognizable brand that speaks to your clients' values and gains their trust. 3. Networked with other professionals. You built relationships with doulas, doctors, and other healthcare providers to create a network of referrals. This not only boosted your credibility but also increased the number of clients who came to you for care. 4. Created valuable content. You created educational content on your website and social media pages that explained the benefits of natural birth and the importance of prenatal and postpartum care. You showed your expertise and gained the trust of potential clients before they even met you. Are these steps hard to achieve? Not really. They just require some foresight, creativity, and consistency. Take the step today to anticipate your clients' needs, build your brand, network with peers and create valuable content. In just a few years, you could be dominating the midwifery field.

This is a sign that nobody wants to see. 🫣 In the ever-shifting landscape of healthcare, a concerning trend emerges as hospitals grapple with staffing shortages, leading to closures of crucial departments. This ripple effect is ESPECIALLY felt in areas vital to community well-being, such as Labor and Delivery and Home Care/Skilled Nursing. As these closures appear to be less temporary, the focus shifts to adapting within interdisciplinary care teams to bridge the widening gap. Our communities are counting on us to shape a healthcare system that truly meets their needs. Connect with Maria to learn more about how MSH can augment your team with great people who fit your unique culture. You deserve a healthcare recruitment partner who gets it. #HealthcareJobs #HealthcareRecruitment #HealthcareHiring #MedicalRecruitment #HealthcareTalent
That sign below is becoming all too familiar. We see it at restaurants, at the store around the corner, at the local doctor's office.... and now we are seeing more of hospitals! A Becker's hospital CFO report shared 10 hospitals closed departments or ended services! Doesn't sound temporary to me. Many of the 10 listed were in association with the following (in no particular order) Labor and Delivery services, a surgical floor, local clinics, Post acute skilled services, home health, etc. Labor and Delivery along with midwifery services stood out to me first and foremost. As much as I agree this level of service is typically very costly to the organization- longer hospital stays, larger overhead costs, etc .... I can't help but think about the larger family unit at hand. Statistics have shown that the mother or female of the household is the key decision maker of the family unit. By disintegrating this service line- I wonder if service lines are being folded into primary care, women's health, or even pediatrics. The other big service line (IMHO) that we are seeing a decrease in services within the hospital systems is home care/ skilled nursing. Very critical services lines for our aging populations at hand. Both of these service lines (L&D as well as Home care/Skilled) and the many other's being cut will show a big pitfall in satisfaction from the community - not just the patient per se. I'm thinking to that larger unit at hand= the families. In a recent conversation this week with our team, there's been a high focus on interdisciplinary care teams. With these closures less than temporary, how will your teams build within their units to make up for what is missing? Our communities are looking to us to provide a healthcare system that fits their needs, we believe interdisciplinary care teams will be the ones who will pick up the pieces. Thank you for the fruitful conversation team! #healthcarejobs #laboranddelivery #midwifery #homehealthcare #skillednursing #msh
