One more big thank you for this week. We couldn't be more thrilled and humbled for the continued support from Miami-Dade County. The county has been an tremendous partner for CARD, with support from Raquel Regalado, Daniella Levine Cava, the Commission, and many others. This commitment was realized this week with the passing of the FY2024-2025 budget, with a record amount of $450K being allocated for CARD, which will go towards our mission to serve (more) families and individuals impacted by autism across South Florida. THANK YOU! https://lnkd.in/e-JHbAHb

The challenges facing children have grown enormously in recent years. Life is just too hard for too many children. There are too many children whose childhoods and wellbeing are affected by poverty, who are struggling with their mental health, and who are not getting the right support when they need it. The work we do daily to support teenagers gives us firsthand experience of how hard life is for some teenagers and families with teenagers. Our Children at the Table campaign wants to ensure the next government has a plan to make decisions for babies, children and young people so children are at centre of their policies. With local authorities’ children’s services predicting an expected £4 billion funding shortfall, there has never been a better time to put vulnerable children first. I’m proud The Children's Society is standing together with our friends Action for Children NSPCC National Children's Bureau and Barnardo's to form The Children’s Charities Coalition. We are proud to have 200 other charities stand with us too. We are calling the leaders of all parties to commit to making children happier, healthier and safer. We want to see an ambitious and collaborative cross-government strategy underpinned with an outcomes framework for happier, healthier and safer childhoods. The experiences and voices of children must be at the heart of decision making and, crucially, a greater share of our national wealth needs to be invested in services for children. We cannot continue firefighting one crisis after another. We need to start investing in prevention and early intervention to make sure babies, children, teenagers and young people are happy, healthy and safe today, and feel confident about their future. Our next prime minister must be a champion for all children before time runs out My article for CYP Now 👇

Amidst the economic challenges NC families are facing, it's crucial to prioritize candidates who support meaningful assistance for families with children. Inflation hits hard, especially for parents and caregivers. But there's hope: the #ChildTaxCredit. The CTC isn't just a policy; it's a lifeline for families. It ensures our children have what they need to succeed. Listen to the 4-minute North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC story to understand its impact and why supporting candidates who back it matters. Let's unite for our children's future: https://lnkd.in/eAzpwms7 #PCANC #BuildingHopefulFutures

In #atlanta , white families have 46 times more wealth than Black families. How do we fix that? Program Director for Baby Bonds, Amit Khanduri sat down with Kendall Glynn at Atlanta Civic Circle to discuss our new pilot program that aims to do just that. Baby Bonds are child trust accounts, funded by the government, for everyone, and they would go a long way towards closing those numbers. The concept is simple. We put money into an account for every child born, add a little each year depending on how wealthy the family is, and let it accrue interest until adulthood. When the child turns 18, they'd have 12 years to use the funds on a wealth building purchase like the down payment on a home, starting a business, or furthering their education. A federal Baby Bonds program, like the one Cory Booker and Representative Ayanna Pressley have proposed in line with recommendations from Darrick Hamilton at The New School, could close the wealth divide for young people by 50% and overall by 26%. We're proud to say that Hamilton is partnering with us on GRO's accelerated pilot which, if funded, would be the first in the nation to return research findings, and the first to be paired with a guaranteed income. Thanks to Atlanta Civic Circle for covering this important issue, and to our partners like Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta for seeing the overall vision. Together, we can make this a truly united and equal city. https://lnkd.in/eyh9fWT9
Could a novel “baby bond” pilot program help to close Atlanta’s racial wealth gap?

Tomorrow, March 19th is VOTING DAY! 🗳 At New Moms we believe in the strength, skills, and potential of young moms. We also know that without stable, safe, affordable housing, the barriers to realizing that potential only get higher. That’s why we support Bring Chicago Home, a ballot measure that would create a dedicated revenue stream to fund affordable housing and supportive services like the ones we offer. Every family, every child, deserves a place to call home. 🏠 And with more than 65,000 Chicagoans experiencing various forms of homelessness—over 17,000 of them children—much more work is needed before that is a reality. As an organization with an equity-driven model and deep roots on the West Side of Chicago, we know that the history of disenfranchisement and disinvestment looms large in the lives of our participants. Between now and tomorrow, March 19, you have the opportunity to VOTE YES to Ballot Question 1. Your vote of YES can help people, like our young moms, find a home where they can build strong family foundations and focus on the goals that will lead them to bright futures! #BringChicagoHome #newmomschicago #brightfutures

Insightful article by Michael Brice-Saddler @Wapo on a Martha’s Table cash-transfer pilot program for low-income mothers. Spoiler alert: Core goals of the pilot were confirmed by reported spending on needs such as housing, food, and transportation. I was struck by the enormity of the pressures that the mothers spoke about: the need to get it right – that if they were unable to markedly change the trajectory of their lives in the period, it is somehow an indictment on them and their perceived deficiencies as a person. This is a lot to absorb, but it speaks to how our systems and structures can and should do more. Moreover, thoughtful systems design can present added opportunities to address the impact of emotional and psychological trauma that pervasive structural racism imprints on marginalized people. #fightinequality #policytools

When you consider federal funding for public education, one does not cut funding that supports the only sector of K-12 public education that is increasing enrollment and growing, namely charter schools. You also do not cut funding to a program that disproportionately supports and increases public school leaders of color because this is the population of new charter school leaders with the least amount of access to private philanthropic dollars to start schools. And, lastly, you don't make cuts to programs that the base of your party, African-Americans and Latinos, support at between 60 to 75% and especially in battleground states.
