Some UNTOLD truths about B-Schools... 🚫 🤐
✍ Dear MBA aspirants from the cohort of 2024 & beyond,
While the brochures, websites, and YouTube videos by the institutes paint a rosy picture, certain hidden realities about MBA are generally not available in the public domain, and you get to know them only once you become a part of the entire system.
Through this series of articles, I will try to highlight these realities, which will hopefully help you make an informed decision and prepare better for the upcoming journey. 🤗
✅ OFFICIAL INTAKE vs ACTUAL BATCH SIZE
🔹 Most private B-schools take candidates way over and above their official intake…e.g., NMIMS has an official intake of 600, but batch size can vary from 700 to even 1000...The same is true for other private B-schools.
🔹 Most private B-schools have Management Quotas (MQs) over and above their official intake…The quota allocation can vary between 5-30% of the official intake…The fees of MQs are around 2–2.5 times that of general seats.
Why does it matter?
▪ This leads to an increase in batch size, which is a critical factor in choosing a particular B-school
▪ Increased batch size means extra competition... The situation becomes worse if the B-school is lower in ranking and no. of job opportunities are limited
▪ Since the official intake is say 600, in a bad market scenario, the college can declare 100% placements as soon as 600 students are placed, leaving the extra 100–400 candidates lurking without any job.
✅ PLACEMENT STATISTICS (applicable to both government and private B-schools)
🔹 100% placements is a myth…If the market scenario is bad, a certain percentage of students remain unplaced.
🔹 Most of the B-schools do not get their placement reports audited…So, the placement figures can be inflated by 5-20%.
🔹 Sometimes the median CTC also do not give a true picture...The deviation from the median CTC can be huge for the bottom 10–20% of the batch.
For example, in SCMHRD, the lowest CTC on offer went down to as low as 10-11 LPA, while the median would be around 20-22 LPA...This is a huge deviation given that the fees for our batch was 24.5 lakhs.
🔹 Also, the stream-wise breakup of companies is not given in placement reports…This leads to the misconception that all streams of a particular B-school are equally good.
For example, in SCMHRD, many dream companies (e.g., Google, Amazon, etc.) come only for HR specialization...Also, for certain corporate case competitions (e.g., ABG), the college is eligible only in HR Track.
🔹 There will be a significant difference in the CTC Figure and your actual in-hand salary.
✅ ACADEMIC RIGOR
🔹 As you go down the college rankings, the quality of education being imparted reduces drastically…Though every college will say that they focus more on practical exposure and case-based learning, the reality is that academics become more theory-oriented and rote-learning-based in lower-tier colleges.
