𝑻𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚, 𝑰 𝑪𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝑷𝑬𝑨𝑪𝑬 Today is International Day of Peace. A day observed around the world devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace through non-violence and cease-fire. When we think about ways in which we can resist white supremacy and all of the oppressive isms that plague our society, peace, rest, and healing aren't typically practices that come to mind. However, it's important to remember that we have the power to choose our response to whatever shows up in our day. By making a conscious decision to create intentional peace in our lives, we can be the change we wish to see in the world. Let's be peacemakers! By adopting a mindset of peace and intentionally seeking out opportunities to promote harmony, we can create a ripple effect that will positively impact those around us. I hope you are as shocked as I do when realizing the story this banner tells. I am shocked and disappointed. The weight of a shattered promise, not just my parents', but a collective hope that our generation wouldn't know the horrors of war. We were raised on the dream of a peaceful life, where conflict wouldn't be the defining narrative of the Middle East and that we will not have to serve in the army. But here we are, facing a reality that feels crueller than any childhood aspirations. I was naive. It's okay to feel naive, to have held onto that glimmer of hope. It's a testament to my inherent desire for peace, a belief in the potential for humanity to learn and grow. Maybe disillusionment doesn't have to be the end of the road. I am fighting my self, trying to acknowledge the new reality and still choose to aspire for a better future. I am looking at this picture, allowing it to fuel my anger, fear, not my despair. I do my best to let it be a stark reminder of the cost of inaction, of the fragility of peace. Trying to channel that fear into action, into conversations with my children, into demanding better from our leaders, into supporting organizations and countries working tirelessly towards a peaceful resolution. We may not have the luxury of naivety anymore, but we can still be pragmatic and proactive. We can be the generation that finally breaks the cycle of violence, not through blind optimism, but through informed action and unwavering commitment. I am trying hard to keep this hope. Amidst the pervasive negativity that has enshrouded our world for an extended span, the torment lingers, not only in my own experience but in the hearts of countless others. What we absorb, we inevitably reflect, and thus, I've penned these lines to give voice to my perspective. In a world marred by strife, a tale unfolds, Where nature's fury and human discord takes its toll, In this time of turmoil, a lesson we must glean, Of the need to come together, let me paint the scene. In a corner of our world, where lines divide, People of varied creeds, on a turbulent tide, In the wake of disasters, they stand side by side, Ignoring differences, their hearts open wide. A helping hand extended, no matter who you are, It's not about where you're from, or how near or far, In these trying moments, compassion takes the lead, A story of humanity, in times of dire need. Amidst the chaos, doubts may start to creep, But in the warmth of unity, those doubts are put to sleep, Though some may falter, their hearts may turn to ice, Others show the way, towards kindness and sacrifice. It is deeply saddening and distressing to witness the loss of loved ones and the pain it brings. The turmoil and unrest that exist in the world today can be difficult to comprehend. Unfortunately, there are many complex factors and reasons that contribute to this unrest, including societal, political, and economic issues. While it may seem that violence and killing are rampant, it is essential to remember that the majority of people believe in and strive for peace and harmony. It is important to continue spreading awareness and promoting the values of love, empathy, and understanding. Indeed, words are powerful, and the influence of positive communication and dialogue should not be underestimated. By promoting peace, respect, and mutual understanding, we can help create a more peaceful and compassionate world. However, it is essential to acknowledge that creating lasting change requires collective effort and a comprehensive approach. This involves addressing root causes of conflict, advocating for justice and equality, and fostering education and empathy. While we may not have the answers to all the questions, it is important to continue advocating for peace and unity, and to support initiatives and organizations that work towards these goals. 'When I speak at events, I always ask the audience what do you value? Over the last few weeks, I have been asking myself do we value peace? We live in a world that only values things it can put a price on. But there is a difference between what is valuable and what has a price. What is most valuable to us often has no price but to live without those things carries an unbearable cost. The cost of loss of human life, the cost of families torn apart, the cost of injury and trauma, the cost of destruction, the long-term cost of poverty. No child should live in a war zone, no person should be without basic human needs, no one should have to suffer because of their religious beliefs and violence of any kind should not be tolerated. How despairing that nations seek to purge the world of love, to make contempt comfortable and suffering a deserving quality. People exonerate themselves within the sovereign conceit. We indulge in its potency, squeezing its rights with insatiable need. Why are we so epic in madding our humanity? We are so sure of opinion, have we need for reason? We are so righteous of power, have we need of justice? We are so befitting of possession, have we need to contribute. The conscience paradigm, written in fear, read in hope stays put upon the page; litigating. The profits of business, the ambitions of politics need not be disturbed by it. As for peoples, the makers of nations, they’re bundled in a destiny and made acquiescent, while others are diminished and forsaken by the state. What are refugees but the exiled of fortune, deprived of human credentials. “Who” is ever spoken, they must remain entities. They are seen at the gates, a species without moral status, withering on the threshold of dignity. I’m asked “them? would you?” There is harm in the question. A threat to know my place. Camps are made, graves too, as Nations look at one another, annoyed with the task of understanding life. There is a reluctance, but the appalling sight mars civility. A bartered deal and the matter migrates. Or does it? Is there one constitution founded on love? Any policy base on loving principles? We speak of love as a great truth though we give it no reason to be one. There’s the rub, it lacks reality. In essence, it’s human spirit. So much of humanity is defined by this, yet borders carve our hearts, our minds and senses. Even then, suspicion lurks in differences when diversity crowds human nature. Love is simple, truthful, caring ironically, too much for nations to do. But peace needs it, justice too. The world has only one relationship – itself.
