And what’s the role of our ministry of mines on reducing mercury use, are there deliberate approaches in place reaching out to the grassroot to curtail its use. Without ASM support, without ASM capacity building we cannot talk of eliminating mercury use.

The Blended Capital Group - ESG, Governance, Strategy and Finance Integration Leadership Focused on Impact Delivery
The Minamata Convention matters and it’s a good thing that countries are still signing up, but a decade after ratification, 85% of informal artisanal miners use #mercury and 37% of 🌍 mercury emissions are generated by artisanal #gold #mining. Recognizing that mercury is a neurotoxin that gets into soil, water, vegetation, animals and people, this is a huge problem. Transitioning miners from mercury toward more benign alternatives doesn’t happen in isolation - it requires a focus on capacity that is part of broader #asgm professionalization. Commercially reasonable approaches for #mininginvestment and #impactinvestment enhance the dignity and productivity of work as professionalization takes hold. Transitions from mercury are part of this process, with broader capacity and #governance enhancements opening up safer options for miners. An investment marketplace supporting #asm formalization will mature given the clear opportunities that are on the table. 🏹 What is the role of the World Gold Council and the LBMA around fostering the development of an investment marketplace for this sector? 🏹 What is the role of refineries and end customers - lack of provenance is not a reason for lack of action, if anything, it is an opportunity for improving provenance through better #traceability 🏹 What is the role of standard setters, including those who set the tone on #responsiblemining practices for large scale projects where land is often co-habited with artisanal miners? The Blended Capital Group and our partners are committed to reimagining outcomes in artisanal mining. Commercial fits of formalization are clear given the financial, social, environmental and economic value that is created. Safety improvements, in this case mercury, are one part of broader improvements in the dignity of work - it is time to turn the vision of Minamata into reality. Reach out to discuss. Ethiopia is implementing CBHI in its own way and more than a thousand schemes are now operational providing financial protection to over 54 million Ethiopians. Next inline is integrating the schemes to improve their risk distribution capacity. A roadmap for integration is essential and the EHIS and USAID HFIP are working together to develop a clear roadmap that can help the CBHI program to be effective in meeting its objectives of improving access to care and providing financial protection to the rural poor and the urban informal sector.

🗝 Understanding fragility from a business perspective is essential, especially in regions where conflict and instability are part of everyday life. “We are expanding, having overcome many initial challenges,” shares Ahmed Khalaf, General Manager of Beirut Erbil for Potato Products in Iraq. When a country is affected by conflict or a region is exposed to fragility, the impact on local businesses can be profound and distinct from those in more stable economies. How prepared is your business to navigate these challenges? The ITC Fragility Exposure Index offers a unique lens to assess fragility from a business-focused perspective. The SME Competitiveness Outlook 2023 report provides vital insights on how small firms can build resilience and transform fragility into avenues for growth, drawing on ITC’s extensive field expertise. That’s why ITC’s work on the ground is so essential—our projects are directly building on and leveraging this research to provide tailored support to Iraqi firms. Read the full report, which includes case studies from several countries, and learn more about the Potato Sector Strategy under the SAAVI project. This EU-funded initiative is implemented by ITC in collaboration with the Norwegian Refugee Council and the Government of Iraq. #SAAVI #Fragility #EUinIraq #TAEUFIQ
