Congratulations to Kingston University student Ned New who has recently achieved his Gold Kingston Award! He has developed so many skills, both academically and professionally, and has shown an outstanding commitment to The Scouts! He shares, “I wanted to enhance my CV and show that during my time at university, I completed more than just a degree. The Kingston Award was a way for me to showcase the skills I had gained on my course and from extracurricular activities I have completed. Assessing how I had demonstrated various skills for each of the attributes of the award, allowed me to reflect on different activities I had taken part in. This improved my understanding of what I had gained from completing certain activities. Following on from this, I was able to improve my CV with more tailored examples of skills, supported with activities I had identified when completing the award. Making a start is the most difficult part! It may seem like many attributes to identify and comment on, but the stages of the award help break this down and they can be reflected on at entirely your own pace. The Kingston Award also encourages you to try new things, where your skills may lack in certain aspects, which only helps you become more well-rounded. It has allowed me to make even more of all the other activities I took part in while at university, because I have been able to show what skills they taught me, even though I was less aware of them at the time. Reflecting on the attributes has allowed me to practice choosing specific examples of where I have gained and demonstrated skills. This has enabled me to improve my LinkedIn profile and CV, and I expect will help me when it comes to job interviews in the future. Cold outreach isn’t just about sales... Here’s an example from my first ever cold outreach campaign - (Scroll to the end to see results) Problem: In college I was on the Fencing team. I noticed we had a really strong group of recruited fencers, but had less recruiting spots than other schools, so it was often difficult to compete. Solution: We needed more non-recruited fencers to apply to level out the team. I figured if we could get them to visit the university, they would be more likely to apply and attend. This is the playbook I used: 1. Find a list of high school athletes that play the sport: For example, for fencing, there’s a public list of all US athletes on the USA Fencing website and their skill level rank (A,B,C,D). 2. Cross-reference that list by some sort of academic index: There’s also a High School Academic All American List for students who have higher than a 3.7 high school GPA. We narrowed the list to A & B level juniors and seniors on the Academic All-American List who weren’t recruited to other schools. 3. Reach out to list via social channels inviting students to visit the campus: We used Facebook back in the day. I got the team together and we reached out to 80 students. 4. Monitor the funnel: 25 students ended up visiting campus over the next 6 months. We made sure to set each one of them up with a student to go to visit classes. Since these students weren’t recruited by other schools the prospective students felt like we were rolling out the red carpet for them. 5. Close deals: Of the 25 students 16 ended up applying to Brown and 2 ended up attending, increasing the first year fencers by 50% over the last year's class.
