Growing up in Boston, I've been an avid Boston sports fan since elementary school, this victory feels especially sweet. As I watched the team celebrate with my son, it struck me how much their journey mirrors the dynamics we strive for in the business world. Here are a few key takeaways: 1.     Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: The Celtics showcased exceptional teamwork, with each player understanding their role and contributing to the collective goal. In business, when everyone knows their part and works together, success is inevitable. 2.     Adaptability and Resilience: The road to a championship is never easy, filled with ups and downs. The Celtics' ability to adapt and bounce back from large deficits, often winning in hostile environments. Securing victories on the road, showcases the team’s mental toughness. NBA all-star Shane Battier is regarded as one of the most successful—if unusual—basketball players in history. His strengths aren't captured by traditional basketball metrics, but his presence on a team made them significantly more successful overall. At our annual Future Perfect conference, Shane joined M13 Partner & Co-founder Carter Reum to talk about leadership, teamwork, and his unique approach to winning. One piece of advice that stood out to us: embrace unseen, unsexy contributions. Winning teams win as a team—not as individuals. It’s important to acknowledge that some of the most important work may not be immediately visible or celebrated. “Kobe Bryant is the toughest competitor I’ve ever had to guard against. But even the great Kobe Bryant had strengths and weaknesses,” says Shane. “I knew when Kobe Bryant went to his right hand, he had a 62% shot of scoring. (That’s legendary, by the way—that’s what makes him one of the greatest players of all time.) But if I sent him to his left hand, and I kept him from the basket, it was only a 42% shot.” “You don’t have to be a math major from MIT to know that if I’m guarding Kobe, I’d rather him have the 42% chance of success than the 62%.” Armed with this data, Shane memorized every spot on the basketball court where he could get that edge. “And so even though I wasn’t sexy, I couldn’t jump, I was slow, I didn’t score—I still knew how to create value on every single space on the floor,” he concludes. “That’s why when I was on the floor, my teams magically played better.” Get more of the top lessons—for business and for life—from their conversation at https://lnkd.in/eAjminmv #leadership #teamwork #datadriven

Talk about unfair advantage, or was it? Seeing Steph Curry confidently make those three-pointers in the 4th quarter for Team USA Men's Basketball in a row now that is performance. He played a crucial role in leading Team USA to victory, helping the team secure the gold medal. It was spectacular. Curry's first Olympic gold medal added another significant achievement. Obviously, he has the experience, skills, talents, and knowledge. This took years and years of repetition and experience. From his interactions with teammates, fans, and family, he also has character. The USA Basketball team demonstrated its commitment to strategy, teamwork, and precision. These players come from all over and must synergize and know each other's abilities in a matter of weeks. I'm not a basketball fanatic, but when I think about company and individual performance, this was a prime example of expertise and dominance in skills and talent. His relentless work ethic and concentration on building his form from the ground. He's focused on continually improving. I'm a forever fan of Curry. Culture affects performance. Our daily reminder in sports: For the better part of the last two decades, the New York Knicks have been a tough watch. Following a difficult 2019 season, they started to find their way -- developing a strong young core to complement a budding star in Julius Randle. That said, recent success can be attributed to a series of moves that started with the signing of Jalen Brunson in the summer of 2022. Over the last two seasons, we've seen a group of talented individuals slowly transform into a team. The world's most famous arena now showcases a brand of basketball that reminds Knicks fans of what they've missed for so long. The Knicks have won six in a row and will face some adversity in their next stretch of games with the loss of Julius Randle. No doubt Jalen Brunson will be focused on what he can control -- a philosophy instilled in him at Villanova University under legendary head coach, Jay Wright. Jay's strong belief that we can always control our #attitude and our #effort has clearly permeated the Knicks locker room. Doesn't hurt that the roster has a few of Jalen's teammates from the 2016 and 2018 National Championship seasons -- Josh Hart, Donte DiVincenzo, and Ryan Arcidiacono. This week, I witnessed history w/ my son as the Stanley Cup was paraded through Fort Lauderdale & triumphantly held aloft by the world champion Florida Panthers. Even if hockey isn't your game, there were invaluable life and work lessons woven into this once-in-a-lifetime experience: 1.      The Journey is Long Winning the Stanley Cup is considered one of the toughest achievements in pro sports. Unlike other tournaments where victory can come from a single match, hockey teams must prevail in grueling seven-game series. Champions are crowned after enduring a demanding journey—just like leaders in business.   2.   Persistence is Key Great achievements are never an overnight success. Only after 30 years of struggle did the Florida Panthers reach the pinnacle. Never say die.   3.      Teamwork Matters Coach Paul Maurice often praises the close-knit nature of the Panthers team. When teammates and colleagues support each other, it creates a magical environment where challenges are conquered and victories assured.   4.  Passion Plus a Plan Desire alone isn't enough; true success requires relentless effort. The Florida Panthers exemplify how combining a passion for victory with preparation, persistent practice, and daily commitment to improvement yields results   5.      Support is Everything True supporters endure all hardships to celebrate victories with their team. Despite torrential downpours, wind and lightning, Panthers fans lined A1A for hours at the victory parade, showcasing unwavering dedication to their team's triumph. Nobody gets to the top alone. For me, this experience was much more meaningful because my son was by my side. Together, we celebrated the result of perseverance, teamwork, and the enduring power of support.
