"Honoring Heritage or Missing the Mark?" - A Look at Design Intent vs. Execution - Palace Commercial Center This building (Palace Commercial Center) is situated at the edge of Zewditu St., near the turn toward Menelik Ave, and faces the historic Gibi Gabriel Church, one of the city’s oldest churches, located near Menelik Palace (now Unity Park). Through discussions with colleagues and industry professionals, I understand that the building’s design concept aims to pay respect to the church, subtly "bowing" toward it, a thoughtful and respectful approach, though this remains speculative, as I don't know the Architect nor the Architectural Firm. The concept itself is admirable, and I appreciate the effort to integrate it into the building's form. However, the execution falls short of effectively conveying this intention with the elegance one might hope for. Various factors, including the limitations of local materials, construction techniques, regulatory constraints, budget, skill levels, and client priorities, likely played a role in translating the concept from design into construction. Elements such as the building’s form, material choices, detailing, and construction quality feel misaligned with the intended concept, as visible upon observation.
