I am excited to share that our research paper on "Social connectedness and supported self-management of early medication abortion in the UK" has just been published. This research is the first of its kind to delve into the intricacies of connection, support, and isolation among those undergoing self-managed abortion in the UK. It underscores the continued need to advocate for high-quality support for self-managed abortion and patient-centred care in the realm of choice of abortion method. #reproductivejustice #autonomy #patientexperience Find the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gXt-ig9x

Words are important, as is the framing of ideas. What is the premise in which we view abortion? I have heard it described as a "necessary evil", or a pragmatic approach to aid "population control". Let's shift the dialogue to one about "bodily autonomy" as the underlying ethical premise. So reducing abortion through use of LARCs, sterilisation, education, and other measures isn't the aim (an important balancing measure, maybe). The aim is to provide bodily autonomy to women through ease of choice, empowerment with education, and availability of options. Check out this editorial authored by Terry McGovern who describes the widespread effects of Dobbs on the entire spectrum of women's health from IVF to safety in childbirth. https://lnkd.in/e2Z-BDBg

These are the facts. Please know what is happening because Harris is using this issue to fear monger people and she is not telling the truth. President Trump is correct and treating women and legitimate healthcare is NOT being withheld. 1. Abortion is legal for any reason up to birth in nine states and DC 2. After birth abortion does occur, and three states have loopholes that allow it. 3. No pro-life law prohibits legitimate healthcare. 4. No pro-life law prohibits IVF.

Abortion reporting following changes in state legislation - Reporting of abortion complication before and after state-mandated reporting changes Monthly state abortion complication reporting before (Pre) and after (Post) state-mandated reporting changes. Institutional complication indicates an abortion complication report submitted for patient that received a termination at our facility (reporting for termination following previable rupture of membranes was not performed before 2021 legislation). All terminations at our institution before the new legislation were performed up to 20 weeks postfertilization for maternal life-threatening indications or for life-limiting fetal anomalies. After legislation, all terminations were performed for maternal life-threatening indications; termination for fetal indications is no longer permissible by law. Outside complication indicates an abortion complication report submitted for patient that received abortion care outside our institution (eg, following a self-managed abortion attempt or abortion at an outside facility) https://ow.ly/TxR950ROaa2

As we mark the second anniversary of the Dobbs decision, it’s crucial to reflect on how changes in healthcare legislation create massive ripple effects in healthcare. Up to one in four known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and the distinction between a miscarriage and an abortion can be unclear. In both cases, the treatments are often the same leading to more blurred lines. Today, under some abortion restrictions: *Doctors can’t offer the full range of treatment options to patients, even for nonviable pregnancies. The vagueness or harshness of restrictions forces healthcare providers to delay or deny care for fear of litigation or prosecution. *Patients may have to travel out of state for necessary care or face long waiting periods to verify that their treatment is for a miscarriage, not an elective abortion. These are critical moments, where every minute counts, potentially jeopardizing health, future fertility, and even lives. *Doctors are caught between state laws and our duty to do no harm. We all took the Hippocratic Oath when we put on our white coats, and abortion bans have forced many to unwillingly break that oath by tying our hands. It has also discouraged a new generation of trainees from pursuing a noble and rewarding career in women's reproductive health, further worsening access to care. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful. Hopeful that women will be able to make decisions about their bodies and reproductive health directly with their physicians. Hopeful that physicians can provide the best quality care to their patients without fear. The medical community, and healthcare as a whole, is resilient. Let’s continue to push for positive change and ensure that every patient has access to the care they deserve. #reproductiverights #fertilitycareforall #Dobbs #Roevwade #accesstocare #access #fertility #abortion #miscarriage

I've been thinking a lot about the danger of spotlighting only the "perfect" abortion patient, and what that means for pregnant people who choose abortion for the myriad of reasons that make up people's lives. Some more thoughts here (feel free to share): https://lnkd.in/dGJr6vYU

In this qualitative study describing the experiences of 54 OB-GYNs practicing under abortion bans in 13 states, OB-GYNs described a range of perceived impacts, including distress at having to delay essential patient care, fears of legal ramifications, mental health effects, and planned or actual attrition. These findings suggest that state abortion bans have impacted OB-GYNs, with implications for both patient outcomes and the sustainability of the OB-GYNs workforce.
