Scientists have made great strides in the global effort to eradicate malaria. In October of 2023, the World Health Organization prequalified the R21/Matrix-M #malaria #vaccine for administration to children. Malaria is a leading cause of death in young children, with over half a million children dying each year because of this deadly mosquito-transmitted parasite. The addition of the #Oxford R21/Matrix-M to the WHO’s list of prequalified vaccines is a significant milestone in the global effort to fight this potentially fatal disease. The vaccine reached prequalification status by adhering to strict international standards for safety and efficacy. Throughout the next year, public health officials will be working to expand access to this life-saving vaccine throughout Africa, thus preventing the spread of malaria and improving the lives of millions of children globally. #vaccines #VectorBorneDiseases #GlobalHealth https://ow.ly/Pwpf50QzBPi

Since the integration of the @WHO recommended Malaria vaccine into routine childhood immunizations, 982,743 children have received all the 4 doses for maximum protection. With 70% of Kenya's population, especially those in high malaria burden counties, at risk for malaria, the introduction of the malaria vaccine in 2019 has been pivotal. Alongside other malaria control interventions, hospitalizations for children under age 5 for severe malaria have drastically declined, leading to a reduction in child deaths in high-risk regions. Programs like this continue to demonstrate that #VaccinesSaveLives. Together, we can work towards the total eradication of malaria. #VaccinateToProtect

Today is World Malaria Day. Malaria has claimed the lives of uncountable children, women and men, particularly in Africa which has 94% of the global incidence of Malaria. World Health Organization and other stakeholders have worked towards reducing the incidence of Malaria and deaths by providing access to Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits, Insecticide-treated nets, Malaria preventive therapy for pregnant women, and drugs. With this year's theme, "Accelerating the fight against Malaria for a more equitable world", particularly as World Immunization Week is been celebrated, it is hoped that when the Malaria vaccine is introduced to Nigeria, Malaria incidence will drop particularly among children. #malaria #vaccinatetoprotecteachother #vaccineworks #EPIat50 #immunizationchampions Picture source World Health Organization

Great to see the Council on Foreign Relations share their perspective and recommendations on the R21 and RTS,S #malaria vaccines published on July 29, and that they echo those of my Chemonics International colleagues Mulamuli Mpofu MPH, PhD and Carey Walovich, MPH. In their blog, Mula and Carey share insights on how to maximize the impact of the vaccines alongside other malaria prevention tools like mosquito nets and insecticides for the best results. I believe these vaccines are a significant breakthrough and a powerful tool in #GlobalHealth, bringing us one step forward to #EndMalaria.But we must complement it with multi-pronged approaches to really ensure they fulfill their potential: https://ow.ly/NyZM30sFCOV

# EndMalaria "In 2022, the African Region accounted for 94% of global malaria cases and 95% of global malaria deaths, with children under five bearing the brunt of this burden. The implementation of new malaria vaccines, however, holds the promise of saving tens of thousands of lives each year, marking a significant step towards health equity and resilience in the region." This holds true that, "the introduction of malaria vaccines in 2024 has the potential to reduce all-cause mortality among children by 13%, alongside significant reductions in severe malaria and hospitalizations. This underscores the critical need for continued investment in health interventions that not only target diseases but also strengthen overall health resilience in the African region".
