Ecuador's path to becoming a leader in deforestation-free production The Latin American country has established itself as a pioneering country in sustainable production, free of deforestation with coffee and cocoa as its flagship products. ☕️ +34 tonnes of sustainable coffee exported 🍫 +10 tonnes of sustainable cocoa exported 🌳 86,000 HA of Amazon rainforest protected With the technical support of UNDP, the Ecuador’s Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture developed the PROAmazonía program which has turned their commodity production to sustainable practices by avoiding the deforestation of more than 86,000 hectares for new crops. The result? An impressive 93% reduction in deforestation in the affected areas. For the Head of the UNDP Environment and Energy Area in Ecuador, Mónica Andrade, the key to success has been inter-institutional cooperation and a shared vision. We are excited that the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development (De Vereniging van Beleggers voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling (VBDO)) recognises our efforts in combating deforestation and preserving biodiversity as a good practice in its recent report on biodiversity and business! 🏆 At JDE Peet's, we are, from bean to cup, committed to making a positive impact on the planet and the communities we serve. Recognising nature’s vital role in coffee production, we intensively collaborate with partners and stakeholders to implement regenerative agriculture and responsible land-use practices. These initiatives not only improve soil quality and water management but also contribute to fighting climate change and uplifting the livelihoods of farmers, their families, and communities. But our commitment doesn't stop there! Engaged in restoration and reforestation projects in countries such as Honduras, Peru, and Indonesia, we address deforestation’s root causes, including poverty. In our unwavering pursuit to combat deforestation, we have set ambitious goals to establish a deforestation-free supply chain and to support coffee-producing nations in achieving deforestation-free sectors. Our inclusive strategy to combat deforestation involves utilising high-definition satellite imagery to map forests and coffee-growing areas accurately, assessing deforestation risks linked to coffee production, and implementing proactive measures to prevent or mitigate deforestation. We are proud that our efforts are recognised and hope sharing our approach can inspire other companies to act as well. Together we can drive positive change in the world! 🌍 For the full report, access the link here: https://lnkd.in/ejDUZj8s #JDEPeets #Sustainability #Deforestation #Biodiversity #Coffee #VBDO #MakingADifference #Honduras #Peru #Indonesia

Deforestation is a critical risk for the future of coffee. At JDE Peet’s we are engaging with the coffee origin countries not only to comply with EUDR but most importantly to stop any further coffee related deforestation so that to contribute to ensure a future for coffee in an inclusive way that protects smallholder farmers and the industry.

UK’s high deforestation footprint, driven by the consumption of products like soya, cocoa, palm oil, beef, and leather. This consumption pattern is causing significant harm to the world’s forests, with repercussions for biodiversity, indigenous communities, and global carbon emissions. The report reveals that the UK’s deforestation footprint per tonne of product consumed is higher than that of other countries, including China. Despite recent legislative efforts to ban products produced by illegal deforestation, much of the deforestation remains legal in the countries where it occurs, posing a challenge to effective regulation.

Empowering cocoa farmers through thoughtful field work / Cocoa liquor and beans quality assurance and supply / Stubborn cocoa farmer / Grumpy agronomist
#cocoa #sustainability #deforestation #huila #colombia #climatechange Do you feel that sustainability requirements are well adjusted for local needs or are too generic? Let's talk about the most prominent sustainability issues that the sector faces, such as deforestation, child and forced labor, among others. Here in Huila, we have cocoa farms hundreds of years old; we don't suffer from deforestation issues because we fell our forests decades ago, before anyone cared. We don't have child labor because most farmers are older than 55, and their now adult children migrated to more profitable (or less risky) activities in the cities, making labor increasingly scarce. What we do have are declining yields because of climate change and soil depletion, and the pressure to chop down the cocoa agroforests in favor of producing cattle or making artificial lakes for fisheries Cocoa agroforest that are the last relict of nature in many places. It might be tempting to sit comfortably with our default complying of global sustainability requirements, becoming a sort of "tax haven" to green wash cocoa beans, while neglecting our own urgent needs. Would you empower farmers' voices even if they challenge your and the market vision of sustainability?

Vegetable oils form an important part of the future of sustainable food systems in Latin America. Yesterday, the Spanish edition of IUCN’s report on the future of vegetable oils was launched at CBD COP16 (COP16 Colombia). The questions posed in the report about the future of food systems are particularly relevant to Latin America: where Brazil is the world’s leading soy producer, and Colombia’s production of palm oil has doubled. To ensure that oil crops become a force for good, stakeholders must focus on sustainable practices throughout the value chain, including regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, agrochemical standards, and fair labour. Leading the research on and scaling evidence-based solutions toward low-emission food systems at the Alliance Bioversity and CIAT
Regarding the EUDR. In a past opinion editorial on Devex, we advocated for a holistic approach to implementation, ensuring farmers aren't left behind. Sustainable agricultural practices, improved land use policies, and a sustainable food system are key.
