Back to Basics or Backwards Thinking? Education changes ignore the digital age - got my rant on last week. We have to teach the 3R’s (as they call reading, writing and mathematics) AND STEAM or our ākonga (learners) won’t be prepared enough for the workforce they will enter. To quote that rant “It’s going to take a concerted effort, a rethink and a brave government to reengineer our compulsory education system - embrace the digital technologies curriculum the last National Government introduced and has languished for years.” What do you think? In higher education digital teaching has become globally important and frequent use of communication tools has also enabled widespread exchange of knowledge and ideas. The retired Professors /researchers can still guide and share the insights of their valuable experiences in almost all the areas. However a methodology has to be developed to make this happen and people even after retirement from higher education can still continue to earn and learn.

In the CHER 2023, I presented some preliminary findings from the study: College students’ learning experience on class recordings: A thematic analysis under the framework of Self-Determination Theory This study explores the influence of class recordings on college students' learning experiences through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The utilization of class recordings in higher education has proliferated, yet systematic examinations of their impact on students' sense of autonomy, competence, and relatedness remain sparse. Adopting a qualitative methodological approach, we conducted online semi-structured interviews with 51 college students in Hong Kong. The aim was to gain a deep understanding of their experiences using class recordings and how these tools impacted their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to learn. The findings reveal that class recordings significantly enhance students' feelings of autonomy and competence. Students reported greater control over their learning process and an increased ability to understand and engage with the course content at their own pace. However, the use of class recordings has limited impacts on their sense of relatedness, possibly due to the less interactive nature of this learning modality. Interestingly, the nature of motivation reported by students was predominantly externally regulated. This suggests that while class recordings can facilitate certain aspects of self-determined learning, they may not inherently drive intrinsic motivation. This research underscores the nuanced impacts of class recordings on students' learning experiences, shedding light on their potential benefits and limitations. During my time working at the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) I was involved in a number of initiatives and case studies that endeavoured to measure the impact of introducing ICT into schools would have on learning. We've come a long way since then, but measuring learning impact is still a critical aspect of ensuring effective teaching and learning. Measuring learning impact in primary education is a multifaceted task that demands a holistic approach. While traditional methods like standardized tests and grades provide valuable insights into academic achievement, they do not capture the full spectrum of learning outcomes. Modern assessment methodologies, including formative assessments, portfolios, and observational assessments, offer a more comprehensive view of a student's growth.
