🔥WSU-ERS SHARE THE PASSION - FROM “CRUSHING ON” MARKETING TO LANDING A PROJECT COORDINATOR POSITION AT BOSCH GLOBAL SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES VIETNAM. Tam Nguyen Pham Nhu, a final-year Marketing student and a well-known face in Western Sydney University's Vietnam campus, shares her meaningful journey of choosing her major and career path. From her high school years, Nhu Tam actively participated in extracurricular activities and social projects to gain closer insight into Marketing. She emphasises the importance of self-discovery during high school to choose the right major. Her decision was influenced by the university's open learning environment, student-centred curriculum, and high-quality education, all of which resonated with her criteria. During her time at university, Nhu Tam demonstrated enthusiasm in both academics and student activities. One of her proudest achievements was balancing her studies with work and personal passions. Thanks to the university's flexible schedule, she interned as a Strategic Planner at DDB Agency by the end of her first year. Additionally, she served as Project Leader at CareerHub VN, a journey that helped her grow, enhance her soft skills, and gain marketing knowledge. Despite her busy schedule, she still successfully maintained the Vice Chancellor's scholarship at WSU. As a final-year student, Nhu Tam offers three pieces of advice for those considering Marketing: 🔹 Get real experience: Reading reviews and hearing stories from seniors is helpful, but firsthand experience is essential to determine if a major is right for you. Choosing the wrong major can mean missing out on in-depth knowledge in a field you love. 🔹 Data is crucial: While creativity is important, Marketing is highly strategic. You need to handle both quantitative and qualitative data to make informed decisions. 🔹 Be adaptable: Marketing is constantly changing and full of challenges. Be ready to pivot when things don't go as planned. Nhu Tam has a passion for Event Management alongside Marketing. Currently, she is a Project Coordinator at Bosch Global Software Technologies Vietnam and plans to pursue a Master's degree in Event Management to enhance her expertise. 𝐌𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐟^&!#*^ 𝐔𝐩 Especially as German I feel that it is somehow inherited in our culture to strive for perfection and to fear making mistakes. When I was working as an intern for 6 months in Sydney at German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce in the PR and Comms department I accidentally linked the wrong advertisement to the newsletter which was sent out to our 200+ members. Yup a typical intern goof-up. In the end we had to offer a special advertisement placement to apologize. Well my point is as Head of Product working in software development it is inevitable that we make mistakes, we just call them bugs. Mistakes give us the chance to #grow and #learn. Especially as a leader it is essential for me foster a #culture where team members feel #empowered to experiment, take risks, and yes, also make mistakes. By reframing failures as stepping stones to success, I think continuous growth and thriving can be cultivated. I think you all will wholeheartedly agree that #Innovation emerges by trial and error and each #iteration can encourage #creativity and #experimentation, ultimately making innovation systemic in the company. Recently I travelled to the US and I noticed quite glaringly that failure and mistakes are not only celebrated but in-fact embraced. From being a failure ➡️ To working for Microsoft today! ⭐ You today see as a successful Software Engineer working at a top tech giant. But this is just the creamy part. What most of you don’t know is that I too had to go through a ton of rejections to reach where I’m today. I failed over 25 MCA exams & not just this I failed to crack the interviews at majority of the companies, during my initial years of career. However, despite these setbacks, I never let them define my future. Coming from a farmer's family, my parents hoped I'd follow in their footsteps. However, I had bigger dreams. I aspired to work for a major multinational corporation (MNC). With poor English and poor tech skills I got into the race of getting a job. And after a great hard work, I finally got my first job (although with the lowest CTC in my college), but seeing my peers get better positions, I pushed myself. Slowly, I proved my worth and, after nearly 5 years of hard work, I finally cracked a job at Microsoft! ❤️ This experience taught me that those already in the field have an even better chance to achieve their dreams. Instead of listening to others, listen to your heart and pursue what you want in life. I understand that it can be challenging for professionals with 6-7 years of experience to switch careers, but it is entirely possible. If I were a fresh graduate looking to land my first PM role in 3 months, here's what I would do: 1️⃣ Volunteer I’d be open to developing my skills by making myself available and gaining relevant experience through hands on work, knowing that every experience counts. 2️⃣ Intern Some organizations offer extensive training to interns, and I’d be intentional in researching such opportunities. I will create a list of 5 to 10 companies where I would like to intern and connect with people currently working there. 3️⃣ Coffee Chats I’d also request coffee chats with experienced Product Managers. These informal meetings would give me the chance to learn from their experiences, gain new perspectives, and discover possibilities I might not have considered. 4️⃣ Build a Side Project By leveraging evolving technology, I’d identify a problem or pain point and create a solution. Even a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) could serve as a strong addition to my portfolio, showcasing my ability to take a project from idea to execution. 5️⃣ Join PM Communities I’d join product management communities and attend events—both in-person and online. These would help me connect with PMs, learn from experts, and engage with peers on the same path. 6️⃣ Build my Personal Brand I’d share my experiences and insights on LinkedIn or start a blog on Medium. Since I don’t have any experience yet, nobody expects me to be an expert but this will give me some exposure and showcase what I know so far. 7️⃣ Find a Mentor I’d find a mentor who can guide me and hold me accountable throughout.
