Happy National Girls & Women in Sports Day! All girls should have the opportunity to participate in #sports.
According to Women's Sports Foundation, which co-created this day of recognition, high school girls have 3 million more opportunities to participate in sports today than they had before Title IX. But disparities persist. White high school girls are missing out on 18% of the opportunities that boys have. Black and Latinx girls are missing out on 33%.
Sports offer a wide range of health benefits. They also build confidence, strength, and character — empowering girls to become leaders. Check out https://lnkd.in/e4HvXQY to learn more about how you can get involved in #NGWSD2024. #genderequity#genderequality
Along with health benefits, sport gives girls so many valuable skills they will carry with them into the rest of their lives, especially their careers. And yet it’s still often overlooked as a tool for women’s empowerment.
According to research from the Women's Sports Foundation, girls involved in sports demonstrate greater confidence and resilience, setting them up for success both on and off the field.
It’s time to change the narrative, and encourage girls to reclaim the power of sport for themselves 💪💥

We love the hype and appreciation that women's sports are FINALLY getting. What's not being talked about, though, is women who are fans of sports and our impact on the looming "sports revolution."
My grad school treatise dove into women's participation in fantasy football and its impact on women's empowerment. But...if fantasy football is more than just a game and is a source of community and empowerment for women, then what about other elements of sports? What about WOMEN'S SPORTS?
Don't underestimate women's sports. Don't underestimate women who are fans of sport. Don't underestimate our power.
Invest time, love, fandomship, and dollars into women.

"Women in Sport’s research found complex barrier and deep-rooted negative attitudes are affecting girls’ enjoyment of sport. Body image and puberty are also significant factors. 78% say they avoid sport when they have their period while 73% don’t like others watching them take part in activity."
Girls drop out of sports at a rate 2-3 times higher than boys. We're committed to changing this narrative. We believe every girl deserves the opportunity to experience the transformative power of sports. The more we know about why girls leave sport, the more we can help to encourage them to stay.

If sport brings boundless joy, why should girls not get the chance to play?
Think of all the reasons women are advised to stay away from sports, from any form of play, and rethink about them. Why not?
A 2022 survey by Women in Sports reported that more than 1 million teenage girls, 43%, who once considered themselves sporty dropped out of a sport after primary school.
At Maitrayana, we believe in the power of sport to transform lives, challenge the status quo, open the door to opportunities, and the claiming of one's agency.

Well said, Tara. I've seen way too many posts on social media today that missed the mark on International Women's Day, especially the "sales" ones! Tara's post hit home with me because it had the right balance of celebration and call to action to keep fighting for equity and inclusion.

There’s a lot about 2024 this 14-year old girl couldn’t have predicted in 1988.
In her wildest dreams, she wouldn’t have envisioned a professional women’s hockey, basketball, or soccer league. She couldn’t have imagined that in 2024, the Paris Olympics would feature an equal amount of men and women in competition. She couldn’t have imagined that her job would be to interview NHL players, sometimes in their locker room, and nobody would bat an eye.
She also couldn’t have imagined that in many ways, the world was moving backwards. That the Margaret Atwood book she’d been assigned in English class would be moving from fiction to fact, and that that book, along with many of the others that fed her heart and mind throughout her life, would be ripped off library shelves. Or that the progress she’d seen around her and the hope of a world that could make space for people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, would be regressing to the point that people were living in fear for their lives. She could not have imagined a world where young classmates would have to learn what to do in case of an armed shooter, and that school shootings were not an “if”, but a “when”.
I am the mother of a 14-year old of my own now, and I am scared for her. You should be too.
You have the potential to make things more safe and equitable for her. You have the potential to make everyone feel like they belong. ❤️
Vote accordingly.

Did you know that sports not only bring joy and excitement but also foster independence, leadership, and a sense of agency in girls and women?
It's a journey of self-discovery and empowerment that transcends the boundaries of the field.
The number of girls dropping out of sports early into their adolescence is alarmingly higher than boys all over the world.
According to a 2022 survey by Women in Sports, the fear of being judged (68%), lack of confidence (61%), pressures of schoolwork (47%), and feeling unsafe outside (43%) were some of the reasons girls stopped playing.
At Maitrayana, safety in sports is at the center of all our interventions. We firmly believe in the transformative power of sports to inspire players to work as a team and imbibe a one for all and all for one attitude.
The Young People's Initiative (YPI) has been at the forefront, empowering thousands of girls and young women through sports. Now, we're on a mission to make sports accessible to all women, breaking down barriers and creating a level playing field, and celebrate all women in sport.
