The Pick-It project, over the past year, has made great strides in supporting waste pickers in the Tema New Town community for the collection of plastic waste. The project has had an amazing year and is on course to reach a collection target of 35 tons per month by the end of the project next year. Yesterday we held a webinar to present the progress of the project and waste pickers, engage stakeholders and garner feedback and inputs to support interventions. Yesterday, BVRio participated in the International Alliance of Waste Pickers event during the #INC4, ‘The Last Frontier: Waste Pickers against Environmental Contamination from Plastic Waste’, hosted by the Governo Brasileiro - Ministério das Relações Exteriores and Fundación Avina. It brought together waste pickers and stakeholders from around the world to discuss the inclusion of waste pickers in the global treaty. Maria Accioly, BVRio circular economy specialist, said the event underscores the importance of waste pickers' involvement in shaping international environmental policies. “These events organised by the IAWP first happened at INC-3 in Nairobi, and are now a pivotal step towards including waste pickers in the Treaty’s text.” Waste pickers are essential to recycling and the circular economy, and by engaging them in global discussions, we aim to ensure their perspectives are integrated into solutions addressing plastic waste. Today, TWI leads the charge towards a zero-waste future, underpinned by comprehensive research, dedicated advocacy, and robust collaborations with community leaders and global partners. Their efforts focus on reducing waste at the source, promoting clean production practices, and eliminating harmful chemicals like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from food packaging. ✅ 🌟 I had the opportunity to represent Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) at the 2nd Observers Meeting ahead of INC-4 conducted by INC-4 secretariat UN Environment Programme today. Other observers included representatives of OPEC Greenpeace GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) Verra Girls Education Mission International ESPERANCE AFRIQUE Vinyl Institute of Canada ISO - International Organization for Standardization and some others. I shared the following interventions & comments regarding the draft of the international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment 1. Integration of guidelines to address plastic waste trade in developing countries 2. Social safety guidelines for the informal sector engaged in plastic waste management 3. Something around Regional Circular Economy Diplomacy 4. Blended financing opportunities to support developing countries to reduce and manage plastic waste crises 5. Technical capacity-building support from developed countries for developing countries. It was an absolute pleasure listening to other observers and their interventions regarding addressing plastic waste.
