12-week org design program | helping companies become fulfilling workplaces full of engaged people | also a leadership program, workshops, and bespoke consulting.
I had a conversation with Lyn the other day about "psychological safety", or as she prefers to call it "perceived social safety". I found most interesting how she relates it to the nervous system, trauma, and status. Here is a teaser: https://lnkd.in/d92FB-nB Watch the full interview at: https://lnkd.in/dhHqSrWe

I specialise in helping professionals overcome workplace anxiety, burnout and overwhelm and supporting businesses to maximise their staff wellbeing
The first counselling session is usually the hardest - you've literally got to rock up and talk to a total stranger about your deepest and darkest secrets (or do you?) That's what I worried about on my first ever session and I know a lot of my clients feel the same so here's a blog on what to expect in your first session - it's not scary and you tell me what you want to tell me! https://lnkd.in/exQz7s4Q

"I've set a date and I've made a plan. Want to hear it?" It's World Suicide Prevention Day, and as a therapist, these are some of the scariest words I have heard. I am lucky enough to be in a profession where I have had amazing supervisors and Safegurading Leads who have helped me know what to do and how to process a client's safety. However, it isn't just therapists who hear this kind of confession. I've had personal trainers, hairdressers, tattoo artists, teachers and many more people in different professions tell me that they have heard this kind of thing from friends, clients, colleagues... The list goes on. When I was young my parents had a friend who would frequently call our home at 6pm, always as we just sat down to dinner, to say they were going to make an attempt on their life right then. I remember my dad saying 'That isn't what we would choose for you. We love you and we want to be there for you. But it is your choice'. My young brain could not compute that level of acceptance or offering someone that level of autonomy. It really wasn't something I came to terms with until I became a therapist, and even now, it is hard to action the theoretical belief that people have the right to choose. Don't mishear me. I am not inactive. I will do all I can within my professional arsenal to prevent anyone from getting to the point of completing suicide. I will hold the pain and fear and sadness in the sessions we have, I will make safety plans, I will call GPs and MH teams, I will hold the risk and manage my own feelings. But in the end, I come to the question, who am I to make that choice for you? Who am I to say you have to go on dealing with the pain or fear or trauma that you live with every day? I worry that my prevention strategies, at times, are trying to protect me from the guilt of feeling I haven't done enough. I wasn't enough. I believe there is always, always hope. I have experienced loss of hope in my own life, and re-found it in time. I believe that is possible for everyone. I never want anyone to feel alone in their pain to the point that they feel there is no hope and no point in going on. But it isn't always within my gift to orchestrate a different outcome. If you are not part of a profession where you get space to process this kind of confession, DM me. Organise a one-off session. Find someone you trust can hold that and speak it out. Go on some training to know what to do if someone discloses they have a plan. Practice self-care. Look out for one another. Ask your friends frank and open questions - it is a huge myth that you can't ask anyone about suicide in case it puts the idea in their head. Think about your own darkest thoughts - could anyone match them or ask you something you hadn't already considered? Probably not. We are usually way ahead of anyone's questions. Check in. You don't have to be alone with your own struggles, or those of someone you love, or those of a client. www.edcounselling.co.uk
