Implicit bias refers to the attitudes and stereotypes that affect people's understanding and actions. It may be hard to detect, but it is equally as harmful as direct acts of racism. In the study described below, implicit bias led to unequal hiring practices based simply on a name. Messages from peers, family, education system and media can start shaping public attitude and assumptions (even starting at a young age!) towards certain groups of people - perpetuating racial discrimination at individual and systemic levels. Does confronting discrimination require flawless response to be taken seriously? At #NeurIPS 2024, a slide with a discriminatory remark toward the Chinese community was presented. Dr. Li’s response—calm, logical, and respectful—was widely praised. But it made me think: why do we hold those confronting discrimination to such impossible standards? This reflects the “perfect victim” narrative—the idea that those facing discrimination must respond in the “right” way to be taken seriously, while emotional or imperfect reactions are dismissed as invalid. It’s unfair and places an extra burden on those already experiencing harm. This incident also raises a critical question: why does this happen at a top AI conference, where fairness is supposed to be a key topic? I hope we can challenge these impossible standards and create spaces where all voices are valued—regardless of how they respond.

For many Americans, the idea of #racism is about individuals rather than a system of laws and policies that produce and reproduce #racial #inequality, known as structural racism. 📚 In this #USAPP Blog piece, Leah Christiani, Nathan J. Kelly, and Jana Morgan find that when white Americans read about #structuralracism, they become more supportive of government policies to reduce racial inequalities 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eXSQ6MYn
