During my first year in Digitalya OPS, I decided I wanted to build a generic client profile to learn how to manage discussions better and how to defuse situations better — but this project was abandoned pretty fast. Today, my feeling is that the most valuable thing in the relationship with a client is honesty. It’s important not to categorize clients into certain types because, usually, it’s about the perspective the client has about themselves, and the messages they send you regarding that. The best approach is open-mindedness, active listening, and being involved. I once had a client who was feeling very tired, saying that they had a lot of meetings that day. I understood that I should send my message quickly, even if we had more time to discuss other things and create space for them to take a break. The strategy that works best is genuine interest in the person you’re working with—be it professional or personal, you need to show that you care and that you are there to help.
