There's a burning need for a dynamic, continuous learning environment that attracts the next generation of seafarers and doesn't burden them with outdated training requirements. Nakul Malhotra shared his thoughts on this in a panel discussion during the Marine Insight Summit 2024, joined by maritime leaders Capt Varun Rawat, Ayşe Aslı Başak and Charlie McKinlay PhD. He suggested that the industry should focus on nurturing seafarers' curiosity and making their jobs more rewarding, going beyond the mundane duties. #maritimeinnovation #shippingnews #humanfactor #seafarerskeyworkers

12 aspects (not always considered) that will improve the safety of your fairway or channel. Episode 2. As I pointed last week, the correct design of fairways and channels regarding the use of AtoNs, it is a process, that must consider among other aspects, the needs and perspectives who will use them, to diminish the potential occurrence of accidents and/or maritime disasters, with loss of human lives, damage to the environment and their assets. These are the next 4 aspects that IALA deemed should be considered during the design of fairways and channels, regarding the use of AtoN. (The last 4 aspects will be considered in my next post). - In the design of a fairway / channel, and where a split is required (e.g., a preferred channel) the following conditions should be taken into consideration: existence of a traffic separation scheme, preferred channel marking, incoming traffic from a different channel with mandatory obligations (to choose one direction) and fairways Intersect. - In a fairway/channel with limited width, consideration should be taken that floating AtoN positions might be subjected to variations (swinging circle) because of depth, tides, current and mooring types. So, special attention should be given to the mooring system and to the type of buoy you will use to keep AtoN´s sufficiently accurate position and not reduce the width of the fairway/channel. - The design of the fairway/channel should ensure ship’s safe maneuvering and assess the navigational risk to improve the safety of ship underway, according to IMO International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (known as COLREGS). - If the conditions of the area include limited visibility (e.g., 10 days of visibility under 1 Nautical Mile per year) installation of an audible, or sound signal may be justified and considered. Unfortunately (or fortunately), there is no single recipe that can be applied to this type of process, but there is no doubt that at least these 12 considerations I will point out and considered by IALA, will allow you to increase the safety standards during the design of fairways and channels -regarding the use of AtoN- that will help you to prevent the occurrence of maritime accidents, damage to the environment and protect your assets. Stay tuned for the last 4. #IALA #maritimesafety #AtoN #wekeeptheshipsofftherocks

Did you know that this week marks the annual International Viking Day, celebrated on the 8th of May? Established in 2013, this day shines a light on Viking culture, renowned for its rich shipbuilding and seafaring legacy. The Vikings played a pivotal role in shaping trade networks during the early Middle Ages, opening many new commercial routes and enhancing the exchange of goods, people, and ideas across the globe, admittedly, some voluntary, some less so. True sailors, the Vikings voyaged all over Europe, settled Iceland, Greenland, and even reached the shores of North America. Navigating challenging weather conditions at sea requires exceptional skills and unwavering determination even today and imagine doing so back then. They key to the Vikings’ successful global navigation lies in the design and construction of their vessels, carefully crafted to endure the rigors of the open sea. Their narrow longships, known for shallow drafts, were ideal for both ocean and inland navigation, and wide heavy knarrs, designed for long voyages and transportation of cargo, were built following the clinker technique, a technological revolution for the day, whereby wooden planks were overlapped and riveted, creating a strong yet flexible hulls capable of braving the roughest seas. Another technique in the Viking shipbuilding was a skeletal construction, whereby first a vessel’s frame was built as a guide, with planks then attached to this framework. Some well-preserved Viking shipbuilding examples include the famous Oseberg Ship in Norway and the trade vessel Ladbyskibet in Denmark. If you haven’t visited them yet, we highly recommend! Who knows, maybe you will uncover some hidden treasure along the way? For us at WESMANS, deeply rooted in the Nordic culture, yet global in our daily business, the International Viking Day is an opportunity to honour remarkable shipbuilding and seafaring skills of the Viking ancestors, who shaped maritime history and trade. While luckily some practices of those days are left behind, we are proud to carry on the spirit of adventure, innovation, and exploration! #internationalvikingday #maritimelegacy #shipbuildingtradition #wesmans
