Sustainability Speak: Mastering the Language of a Greener Future To do well in #ESG practices and sustainability advocacy, you need to understand the lingos often used in conversations in the field. Here are a few important ones and their meanings. 1. Carbon Footprint: The total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions. 2. Circular Economy: An economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources through reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling. 3. Climate Change: A long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth's local, regional, and global climates. 4. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): A self-regulating business model that helps a company be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public. 5. Ecosystem Services: The many and varied benefits that humans freely gain from the natural environment and from properly functioning ecosystems. 6. ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance): A set of standards for a company’s operations that socially conscious investors use to screen potential investments. 7. Greenhouse Gases (GHGs): Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. 8. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): The assessment of the environmental impact of a product or service throughout its lifecycle, from raw material extraction to disposal. 9. Renewable Energy: Energy from sources that are naturally replenishing but flow-limited; they are virtually inexhaustible in duration but limited in the amount of energy available per unit of time. Examples include solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. 10. Sustainable Development: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 11. Zero Waste: A philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused and no trash is sent to landfills or incinerators. 12. Biodiversity: The variety and variability of life on Earth, typically a measure of variation at the genetic, species, and ecosystem levels. 13. Carbon Neutral: Achieving net zero carbon emissions by balancing emitted carbon with carbon removal or simply eliminating carbon emissions altogether. 14. Fair Trade: A trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency, and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers. 15. Greenwashing: Disinformation disseminated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible public image while its products, business practices, or policies are not environmentally friendly. Scatec has achieved significant recognition by being ranked the second most sustainable company in Norway and 99th in the world by TIME World's 500 Most Sustainable Companies. This accomplishment underscores Scatec's commitment to sustainability, environmental and social responsibility. For the first time, TIME, in collaboration with data firm Statista, developed a methodology to evaluate the world’s most sustainable companies. This comprehensive assessment takes into account various factors, including environmental and social stewardship, sustainability reporting and ESG ratings.    The leading companies on the list, including Scatec, have committed to ambitious climate goals such as the 1.5°C target set by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Interesting to see another waste management / recycling provider at the top although Schnitzer/Radius replaced by Sims this year reflecting a continued uptick on sustainability in Australia. I read this article from ESG Today and it has stuck with me. Companies are starting to truly invest in sustainability initiatives - over 80% of those surveyed are increasing their budgets next year for these areas (Emissions reduction, Pollution prevention, Energy & Efficiency, and Circularity & recycling).
