I'm excited to be attending a FIRST #Robotics professional development training course later this week. This will help to prepare me to serve as a mentor for students at our partner schools wanting to participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics competitions. FIRST is a non-profit organization based on the following core values: #Discovery - fostering a desire to explore new skills and ideas #Innovation - using creativity and persistence to solve problems #Impact - applying acquired knowledge and skills to improve our world #Inclusion - respecting and embracing our differences #Teamwork - instilling the notion that we are stronger when we work together #Fun - enjoying and celebrating what we do I particularly like that FIRST encourages #coopertition. While teams compete, they also help one another - definitely not a "win at all costs" mentality. I'm looking forward to two days of learning, sharing, and growing. The core values underlying the FIRST program align well with our mission at the Excalibur Solutions STEM Academy®. We aim to inspire students to pursue a #STEM field in college or as a career by teaching them tangible skills and concepts in #computerprogramming, #electronics, #3Dmodeling, robotics, and other areas of #technology and #engineering. Unplugged, practical, conceptual, and accessible—these were the foundations of a profound moment in Early Childhood Development Education. Teaching coding and robotics to ECE facilitators, regardless of their: Age, Educational background, Language of instruction/comprehension, Skill level, and access to resources often seems like a daunting challenge. Yet, with preliminary observations and data, we've broken through all these barriers and achieved comprehension in our 2-day workshop! This achievement was made possible by our dedicated host organization, Sebofon NPC, with the incredible support of Standard Bank and the Department of Education in Kwa-Zulu Natal. With Toyota South Africa, and the University of Pretoria as observers. Kayla Willemse (PhD) for providing support, her expertise in Coding and Robotics and for her input. What an incredible event it was! The talent on display this Saturday was nothing short of inspiring. Here are six key takeaways from the day: 1. Partnerships Matter: WCED expertly coordinated a diverse group of partners. Each partner was assigned responsibilities according to their strengths, contributing to the event's overall success. 2. Venue and Support: The choice of venue was ideal, but the standout was the dedicated support from CPUT's engineering students, who played a pivotal role in guiding learners on the day. 3. Champion teachers: A strong champion teacher is crucial to driving participation and success at the school level. Their leadership can make all the difference in engaging learners and integrating digital programmes. 4. Corporate Involvement: Old Mutual’s participation was invaluable. As corporate support grows, so too will the impact of these initiatives. 5. Student Engagement: The enthusiasm and curiosity of the learners were the driving forces behind the event’s success. 6. Looking Ahead: This hackathon has laid a strong foundation for future events, potentially inspiring and empowering even more young minds.
