Future droughts will be shockers. Severe drought and extreme heat will directly impact the lives and livelihoods of people worldwide. Research shows that 3.6 billion people already live in areas highly susceptible to climate change. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year, from undernutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress alone (WHO).

An extremely important and timely conversation, occurring when some African nations are confronting extreme weather events like the deadly floodings in Kenya and neighboring countries. From more frequent outbreaks of infectious and waterborne illnesses, which further strain already overburdened healthcare systems, tackling climate change is essential to safeguarding human health. We must prioritize climate change with a renewed sense of urgency!

We have been keeping a close eye on emerging data that describe the implications of climate change on diseases in our research portfolio. An increasing pool of modeling studies indicate that changes are likely in the epidemiology of certain vector-borne (e.g., malaria and dengue) and water-borne (e.g., cryptosporidiosis diarrhea) diseases because of rising global temperatures. Specifically, evidence suggests these conditions could be exacerbated in regions where they are already endemic and could spread to new areas. There is also concern that the effects could more severely impact populations in low- and middle-income countries depending on the resiliency of civic and health infrastructures.
