The Deloitte State of the South African Child report, co-authored with Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, reflects on the critical risks facing our children, and the future of the country. Did you know: 4.8 million children live below the poverty line, and 62.1% of children are multi-dimensionally poor with 51% of children being monetary poor. These children don’t eat on a regular basis, they often don’t have shoes, and many don’t attend school. The best way to reduce child poverty in the UK is to invest in prevention schemes supporting parents and better co-ordination between services, according to the new the Closing the Gap report from NPC (New Philanthropy Capital). It is time for a systemic approach to tackling #childpoverty front-loading investment in prevention to support parents and families, and co-ordination to bring together services and current help, alongside engaging parents in designing & delivering programmes. It also means focusing on #earlychildhood which we know is the most vital time in defining children’s life chances. Other recommendations in the report by NPC (New Philanthropy Capital) for preventing child poverty in the UK, which at 29% has one of the highest rates of child poverty for a developed country, include: >Support for schools, nurseries and other settings to act as community hubs >More training for child carers and the #earlyyears workforce Long-term philanthropic funding can play a key role in supporting children and young people’s services. 🔔 NEW REPORT- Closing the Gap: Building better child poverty prevention systems   Today we’re launching a new report with the Ethos Foundation which highlights what's needed to build effective systems of child poverty prevention, sets out levers for change and recommends areas for investment by funders and philanthropists.   The UK has one of the highest rates of childhood poverty for developed countries, with 29% of all children in the UK living in poverty. This should be a source of national shame in one of the world’s most advanced countries but seems to be accepted as part of our society. The impacts of growing up in poverty can be long-lasting, affecting children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.   This analysis, commissioned by the Ethos Foundation, draws on an evidence review and consultation with policy experts, researchers, organisation leaders, charity professionals and funders to understand where the current system is failing, and what an effective system of child poverty prevention might look like.     #SystemsChange #ChildPoverty #Charity #Philanthropy Grant Gordon OBE Seth Reynolds Naomi Chapman

Our 2022 Vital Signs report, in collaboration with Dr. Kate Dawson, Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science, shed light on pressing issues affecting our communities. Here's a snapshot: In Tower Hamlets, 44% of older individuals reside in income-deprived households, with similar figures in Hackney (41%) and Newham (37%), far surpassing the national average of 14%. When factoring in housing costs, London emerges with the highest child poverty rate in the nation. Within the capital, Tower Hamlets (53.4%), Newham (43.2%), and Hackney (41.3%) bear the brunt, with the highest proportions of children living in poverty. This is a sobering UNICEF league table on changes in child poverty over 7 years up to 2021 and the UK is at bottom with a 20% increase in the child poverty income rate. Poverty is most often defined by income. But for most children, poverty is about more than just money. It is about growing up in a home without enough heat or nutritious food. Poverty means no new clothes, no telephone and no money for a birthday celebration. These deprivations have consequences that can last a lifetime. Research shows that children in poor families are less likely to complete a good education. At Inclusion Education we are passionate about making a positive difference for our learners and students. One of the ways we are supporting them is by raising money for our #LittleHelpFund.
