Denying illness doesn’t erase it. But interestingly, many Americans cope by downplaying diagnoses. • 81% insist they’re in “very good” health despite being diagnosed with mental or physical health conditions. • 67% say their problems don’t warrant concern because others have it worse. • 61% say they’re expected to just “get over” their stress. Resigning to fate, they deny treatment and cite lack of time or insurance as obstacles. When it comes to mental woes, 40% question therapy’s usefulness, yet 44% say they wish they had someone to talk to for support. Unfortunately, ignoring symptoms only compounds the problem and causes people to seek relief elsewhere — namely from booze, weed, or pills. When it comes to our health, a positive perspective is good, but delusion can be dangerous. A recipe for chronic illness, hiding from our problems won’t help unwind them.

Anyone can be affected by hunger. It only takes one life event – an unexpected bill, a job loss, a health crisis. But the disadvantages faced by some groups often make them more prone to the kinds of life events that can initiate the cycle of need. The US Surgeon General released an 82 page document on the epidemic of loneliness. The lack of social connection poses a significant risk for individual health and longevity. Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk for premature death by 26% and 29% respectively. More broadly, lacking social connection can increase the risk for premature death as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. In addition, poor or insufficient social connection is associated with increased risk of disease, including a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. Loneliness is associated with increased risk for anxiety, depression, and dementia. Additionally, the lack of social connection may increase susceptibility to viruses and respiratory illness. Loneliness is a public health crisis which makes it a mental health crisis. Please check on your friends and colleagues. Was anyone surprised from this report? The Public Health Agency of Canada estimates that almost 12 million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes. High-stress levels and diabetes are intricately linked, with chronic stress often significantly raising a person's blood sugar levels. Learning to manage your mental health by building positive health habits can help you manage both stress and diabetes. Neglecting to maintain these habits can lead to potentially increasing the risk of developing diabetes complications over time.
