As promised, I’d like to highlight a company I was both grateful to have conversations and interviews with, and impressed by their offerings. #5 - Verkada If you don’t think Verkada serves a place in the market, you’re flat out kidding yourself. Their technology and product offering is leaving people in the dust. If you don’t believe me that’s fine; I’m probably not qualified to make that statement anyways. However, the people at Alkeon Capital, Lightspeed and some others decided to give them 305mm in series D funding so they must be doing something right! I had the pleasure of being referred to Dan Bettencourt and enjoyed meeting him and learning about where he is looking to provide value to the A/E space. He is hard charging, driven, and honest. We had many conversations about what it looks like to be successful in the market and spoke candidly about what failure looks like too. The name of the game is accountability and they do it better there than other places I have seen. This lead me to really taking a look at my own style of business relationships and I think, to be honest with myself and Verkada, I would have struggled to succeed here. Most of my success in selling was through leveraging industry relationships to grow. At Verkada, they are charging the market predominately alone and I don’t think I would have done well without having the ability to network and win with my peers across the industry. And don’t get me wrong, I can rip the phones with the best of them, but there’s an amazing power in the security industry in that we can create and collaborate with one another to make each solution better and that’s how I want to continue in my career. Atul Raghunathan and I had the honor of finally meeting one of our biggest supporters and advisors, James Isilay, in person! We learned about his incredible journey founding Cognism and the different roadblocks he ran into along the way and how he overcame them. Here are the top 6 things we learned that are helpful for other founders as well: 1) Your customers aren't always going to connect the dots. It's your job to show why you're valuable. 2) Early-stage founders often tend to focus on the sale, but very few prioritize the customer journey beyond the sale. Building an early repeatable customer success plan is just as important as building a repeatable sales process. 3) Product and customer journey are the 2 most important pieces of the startup lifecycle. When founders detract from any of those, they're distracted. 4) Focus your time on the things that will make or break the business, anything outside of that, don't be afraid to delegate and rely on your team. 5) Especially early-on, hire people that can ideate and bring something unique to the table, not people you have to micromanage. Hire people that you can bounce ideas off of. 6) Visuals are a powerful, underrated tool. Never simply rely on explanations of value, whether you're speaking to an investor, client, prospect, etc. Getting 1 on 1 time with founders at Cognism's stage is a rare opportunity, and Atul and I are lucky to have the privilege.
