We're pleased to announce the launch of two EU-supported projects in #China, marking our commitment to sustainable development and international development cooperation. 💧𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 “𝐄𝐔-𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫” 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 The 𝐄𝐔-𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 aims to continue promoting a mutually beneficial EU-China water policy dialogue, supporting both partners’ ongoing efforts for global water security, the achievement of water-related SDGs and environmental and climate targets. The 3-year project, implemented by our Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NEC) team and GOPA Infra, launched at early this year in cooperation with EU Member States and the China-Europe Water Platform, and involves European and Chinese authorities, academia, businesses and experts for enhanced cooperation opportunities on sustainable water management issues. Under the leadership of the Team Leader Richard Hardiman and the Deputy Team Leader Yinghao Li, we are collectively committed to making significant contributions to the success of this crucial initiative, building on over 20 years of EU-China cooperation on water. ⚡️𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐈𝐈 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔-𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 Our Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NEC) team and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH launched phase III of the 𝐄𝐔-𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 (𝐄𝐂𝐄𝐂𝐏) in China, under the leadership of the Team Leader, Dr. Flora Kan, and Energy Policy Expert / Deputy TL Enrui Zhang. This 5-year contract, launched at the start of the year, aims to widen and deepen the existing fruitful EU-China cooperation on energy, strengthening long-term bilateral exchanges at policy, technical and business levels for a clean energy transition, the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement. Working on this story was an insightful journey. At the International Court, climate and international law are facing a critical juncture. With large global polluters currently focused primarily on emissions and impacts within their own systems, this case shifts the focus of accountability far beyond national borders and economies, reflecting the interconnected nature of our global environmental challenges. Some nations and industry lobbies are challenging this approach, arguing that current frameworks are adequate in both scope and pace. However, scientific consensus increasingly emphasizes the urgent need for more comprehensive and decisive climate action, raising questions about the sustainability of arguments that resist meaningful global environmental accountability. Vanuatu's plight stands as a stark warning: in the rising tides of climate indifference and bureaucratic latency, entire nations, cultures, and peoples risk becoming footnotes in one of humanity's most critical narratives.

Vanuatu’s stand at the World Court represents a turning point in the fight for climate justice. The case seeks to hold high-emission nations accountable for pollution that disproportionately harms vulnerable countries. Despite contributing less than 1% of global emissions, countries like Vanuatu bear the brunt of rising sea levels, extreme weather, and cultural loss. This historic case also asks: What is the role of corporations and governments in addressing this harm? Many high-emission countries and industries continue to resist change, prioritizing profits over sustainability. Yet the tide is turning, as international law steps in where diplomacy has stalled. 🔔 The third #Environmental Performance Review (EPR) of #Kyrgyzstan, undertaken by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, will support the government to strengthen #ClimateAction and address pressing environmental challenges, including in mountainous areas. The main findings were presented by UNECE and the Kyrgyz authorities at COP29 Azerbaijan. The review provides recommendations to guide the country in achieving the #SDGs, as well as national commitments to advance #SustainableDevelopment and environmental management. This third EPR evaluated progress since the second review in 2009 and comprises 18 chapters covering a broad range of themes and contains 89 recommendations and 257 sub-recommendations addressing pressing environmental concerns in Kyrgyzstan. “By carrying out an EPR for the third time, Kyrgyzstan demonstrates its sustained commitment to addressing environmental challenges and working towards a more sustainable future," said UNECE Executive Secretary Tatiana Molcean. "The review highlights the country’s advances in preserving its natural resources and adapting to climate change impacts.
