Exposure to mercury can pose serious health risks to those working in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (#ASGM) sector and their communities, including respiratory problems and adverse impacts on reproductive health. #Cameroon has taken significant steps in addressing harmful mercury emissions from its ASGM sector by developing a National Action Plan (NAP) with the support of #UNIDO. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dnPweEEu Minamata Convention on Mercury | Global Environment Facility | Rodica Ella Ivan

On this Indigenous Peoples Day, I am proud to share a bit of my work under the Minamata Convention on Mercury to help address the social, economic and environmental challenges associated with mercury pollution from artisanal and small-scale gold mining on Indigenous Peoples worldwide. There isn't a simple solution to this complex challenge but combating the illicit trade of mercury, creating alternative livelihoods and increasing transparency in the gold supply chain will be key improving the dire condition of millions of Indigenous Peoples and local communities that engage in or are impacted by mercury used in gold mining and, at the same time, reduce the impact on biodiversity and ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/dut_X64C #indigenouspeoplesday | #ASGM | #MinamataConvention | #KMGBF | #biodiversity

Are algae beneficial or harmful? Answer: BOTH! Algae, in its natural state, are extremely beneficial to the environment. However, excessive algae growth can disrupt water ecosystems and endanger marine life by depleting oxygen and releasing toxins. We recognize the harm in these blooms, but we also see the potential! We harness algae to produce renewable resources, promoting ecosystem health in the process. In other words, we turn algae from a nuisance into a valuable asset! Want to learn more about our process? Utilizing the U.S.-Canada boundary waters treaty, the plan involves independent boards for pollution study and cleanup recommendations, following years of indigenous advocacy and confirmed selenium impacts by the EPA. Teck Resources, facing a $60 million fine for pollution, has begun water treatment efforts, promising reduced selenium levels. #finance #news #EnvironmentalProtection #CoalMiningPollution #USCanadaCollaboration Source:- https://lnkd.in/dcz36YXG

Sadly, we can't promise that every pic on our feed is scenic and flawless! 🥴 Algae is the most abundantly growing organism on our planet. When pollution is in abundance, algae absorb it at an uncontrollable rate. Until we fix our own mistakes, like polluting water, we will always continue to see algae blooms like this one. 😕 But hold on! We're a positive bunch, so we like to turn the negative into a positive! By harvesting excess algae biomass and implementing it into performance products around the world, we've created an efficient supply chain for algae as a sustainable resource, all while helping create and maintain healthy ecosystems. Want to know how we do it? Ask us below! #MadeWithBLOOM #algae

Recent research from Cornell University has shed light on the potential of biochar, derived from crop residues, as a means to mitigate climate change. This study, utilizing a high-resolution global dataset, identifies areas where crop residues could be sustainably transformed into biochar. Notably, the research indicates that 12 countries could offset over 20% of their total greenhouse gas emissions through this conversion, with Bhutan leads the way with the potential to sequester 68% of its emissions in the form of biochar, followed by India, at 53%. Beyond carbon sequestration, biochar also contributes to enhanced soil fertility and plant growth. This innovative approach to atmospheric CO2 reduction, along with the prospective use of coal mining tailings, represents a significant stride in climate change mitigation efforts. #ClimateScience #SustainabilityResearch #EnvironmentalInnovation

Mining has caused a worldwide loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, water pollution, air pollution, land damage, and significant #CO2e generation at a large scale. Can the #Earth ever recover? We can if we recognize that all of us alive today are #GenerationRestoration, and it is #OurFuture at stake. A #BatteryRecycling or #UrbanMining facility can be set up in exponentially smaller sizes while yielding the same or more quantity (and quality) of materials. At LOHUM, we prevent #LandDegradation by making it highly profitable to never dump #batteries in #landfills. We also save 500x the water consumed in producing #TransitionMaterials versus conventional mining per ton. Happy World Environment Day!
