Is Europe truly lagging in innovation and AI? This perspective, while common, can be misleading. Recognising structural and ecosystem dependencies is certainly critical, but not enough. I think that the challenge for Europe is broader: it's about rethinking the role of technology in driving economic growth and social well-being. My short pamphlet delves into the history of innovation in Europe over the past decades, examining how the EU has dealt with it. I also sketch out some ideas for innovation that transcend both the typical arms race narrative and the GenAI excitement, to embrace a holistic view of the positive role technology could take reshape Europe's future. The Future of AI Regulation in Europe Earlier this week, Lukas had the chance to discuss with Svenja Hahn, who was leading the negotiations for the #European #AI Act. At Sphere Energy we are keen to understand the implications for companies that build foundation AI models. "I really appreciate the EU's approach on this, separating the technology regulation from the product regulation. I think that's smart," Lukas commented. By focusing on regulating AI-powered products, the EU acknowledges the complexity and rapid evolution of their underlying technology. One of the highlights of their discussion was the importance of collaboration. "We need to find a way to stay open and foster innovation while protecting our society from the risks of AI. This can only work if regulators work very closely with innovators and entrepreneurs in this field," Lukas noted. The shared goal is clear: to create an environment where AI can thrive responsibly. Big thanks to Dr. Julian Lohf and the entire CODE_n team for organizing this great event! #AI #EUAIAct #Innovation #Regulation #Technology #Collaboration #ArtificialIntelligence #SphereEnergy #FutureTech #GenAI #LLM #AIForIndustries #EuropeAI #Battery #BatteryDataManagement #Sustainability #EnergyStorage #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy #LithiumIon

When China’s government laid out its top priorities for 2024 at the National People’s Congress (NPC) in early March, promoting economic growth did not get the top position. Instead, top spot went to a call to develop “new productive forces”, a relatively new slogan that symbolizes China’s high technology drive. Key Takeaways: - The recently concluded National People’s Congress focused on China’s high technology drive as a top priority. - China’s AI focus is less on becoming a global leader in large scale generative AI models and more on practical AI applications. - We see a diverse range of opportunities where companies can benefit both directly and indirectly from China’s sustained investments into digital technologies and AI.
