This level of attention in no small way clearly contributed to the commercial aviation sector having an exceptionally safe year in 2023 according to the recently published IATA Annual Safety Report. This outstanding safety performance "in the air" begs several thought provoking questions: "How are we doing from a general aviation safety perspective when the aircraft is "on the ground"? "Are we adequately focused on ensuring an equivalent level of safety and protection for ground operations personnel in the general aviation sector?" "Are the hazards existing within the general aviation (GA) community any less concerning that those existing in the air carrier world?" "How do we ensure that the precepts of protection and production remain balanced during the conduct of general aviation ground operations as well as we do when the aircraft is in flight?" "Should our focus on general aviation safety performance, ongoing application of risk management principles, or collective concern for the safety and well-being of our employees and customers exist only when the aircraft takes flight?" "What happens if GA management spends money on safety training for employees and they leave?" "What happens if GA management never spends money on safety training for employees and they stay?" Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Australian and New Zealand Societies of Air Safety Investigators (ANZSASI) 2024 Regional Air Safety Seminar. This event was an eye-opening experience, which brought together attendees and presenters with decades of invaluable experience to share their wealth of knowledge and perspectives on how safety in the aviation industry can be further improved. The event was also an opportunity for the ASASI and NZSASI members to maintain the close relationships built over time, and served as a reminder for younger aviation professionals to continue the generational work of the industry's pioneers. Here are some of the key learnings I have taken away which will no doubt be of tremendous value to my role in CAR Part 139 and 100 compliance: - There is still a lot to be learned about what an effective and successful SMS should look like. - An overly complicated SMS does not necessarily lead to an effective SMS, but rather, it should be simple enough to allow all members of an organisation to contribute easily. - Understanding the context of the incident or accident is key, and investigators should strive towards identifying issues within the system, not the person. - A high level of operational understanding and partnerships between the aviation and emergency response industries is key to the quality and reliability of an investigation. - Trust in the system, colleagues, employees, and leaders is crucial for an effective SMS and positive safety culture. - Due to the rarity of an incident or accident, recurrent training is vital across the organisation. While these may sound obvious, the seminar highlighted the need for continuous improvement and awareness throughout the industry, and to remind ourselves that the industry and its players must continue to minimise the hazards and risks that arise from the inherently high-risk nature of aviation and its operations.

GrandView Aviation Annual Safety Stand Down At GrandView, safety is a core value and fundamental priority, reflected by its impressive safety ratings from the industry’s top associations: ARGUS Gold, IS-BAO Stage 2 Operator, and WYVERN Wingman PRO—the latter certification is private aviation’s highest safety standard earned by only 15 other operators in the world. International Air Transport Association (IATA): Cabin safety is a key area impacting operational safety. Historically, the safety role of cabin crew was seen as limited to post-accident evacuations. Although this remains an important and essential duty of cabin crew, today the safety role of cabin crew goes much further. Cabin crew contribute to safe, effective, and efficient operations in normal, abnormal, and emergency situations. They play an important role in preventing serious incidents and accidents, including (but not limited to) events such as in-flight fires, unruly passengers, depressurization, and turbulence. It is for this reason that IATA focuses on cabin safety and continues to develop standards and recommended practices to ensure safety in all aspects of cabin operations. IATA’s Cabin Operations Safety Best Practices Guide provides a central reference source for industry best practices, sample policies and procedures as well as recommended practices and regulations such as ICAO's Annex 6 relating to the delivery of safe and efficient cabin operations.
