Most people who see my posts are codec enthusiasts who want to see new codecs succeed as quickly as possible. However, certain realities impact the timing of all codec adoption and deployment, first by infrastructure providers and then by publishers. This post reviews these hurdles with pictures. Review all six, and you'll have a great framework for understanding how soon codecs like VVC and even AV1 will be relevant for independent publishers.

To ensure global network readiness for L4S for ultra-low latency apps like cloud-gaming and more widespread applications like streaming, Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) needs to be supported by the client and server and every device within the network path. Through Catchpoint’s Pietrasanta Traceroute, we have been collecting data on ECN bleaching rates in cities, countries and ISPs globally. Our measurements examine how often ECN bleaching occurs and where in the network it happens. If any ECN bleaching is found, L4S will not work. Chief Growth Officer, Strategic Partnerships, Trusted Client Advisor, New Product Development, Go-to-Market, Media/Entertainment
“Emerging” codecs like AV1, VP9, and HEVC are hardly newcomers to the streaming scene, and their implementation and breadth of industry support—particularly AV1’s—has grown by leaps and bounds. Yet the long-in-the-tooth AVC/MPEG-4 Part 10 just won’t go away, largely because of its tried-and-true every-device support, even though the superior efficiencies of more advanced codecs are legion. So, how close to obsolescence is AVC in 2024?

I am excited to share that our paper entitled "MEDUSA: A Dynamic Codec Switching Approach in HTTP Adaptive Streaming" (w/ Farzad Tashtarian, Hermann Hellwagner, Christian Timmerer) has been accepted for publication in the prestigious ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications (TOMM) journal (Q1, IF: 5.1). Trying to optimise multi-codec video streaming from a client perspective, we formulate the problem of selecting the appropriate codec for each user and video segment (on a per-segment basis in the outmost case), exploiting key metrics, such as the perceived segment quality (VMAF) and size. To tackle this problem, we develop an adaptive bitrate (ABR) plug-in approach called MEDUSA that can enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE) of the users by up to 42% according to the ITU-T P.1203 model (mode 0) and reduce the transmitted data volume by up to more than 40% achieving a QoE similar to state-of-the-art techniques, reducing the burden on streaming service providers for delivery costs. It’s been 3-plus years since the MPEG codec explosion that brought us VVC, LCEVC, and EVC. Rather than breathlessly trumpet every single-digit quality improvement or design win, I’ll quickly get you up-to-speed on quality, playability, and usage of the most commonly utilised video codecs and then explore new codec-related advancements in business and technology.

📶 The Future of Video Streaming with 6G and Edge Computing With the rise of 6G, video streaming is set to enter a new era, offering greater bandwidth, lower latency, and enhanced connectivity. Our study maps how Fog and Edge Computing environments, leveraging QoS (Quality of Service) and QoE (Quality of Experience) metrics, can improve resource management and dynamically adjust video quality. The results provide valuable insights into optimizing protocols like DASH and HLS, highlighting the most commonly used metrics and new strategies for developing adaptive streaming services. I'd like to congratulate my PhD students Andre Moraes and Laercio Pioli for the outstanding work. 💡 Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dV9-jWnX #Streaming #6G #EdgeComputing #QoE #QoS
