Sustainability vs Inflation 🌍✨ How does high inflation impact sustainability trends? High inflation affects the sustainability market in significant ways. As prices rise for goods and services, the cost of producing and buying sustainable products also increases. These products often already carry a premium due to their ethical practices and higher-quality materials. 💸💚 Consumer willingness to invest in sustainability varies. While many value eco-friendly choices, not everyone is ready to pay extra during inflationary periods. A key segment to growth of GDP has been businesses. But what happens when there are pricing distortions, monopolies, information asymmetries, and market distortions? Pricing distortions lead to overconsumption of goods and services that have a significant environmental footprint (e.g., resource extraction, manufacturing, transportation, waste generation), it can place additional burdens on the planet's ecosystems and natural resources. Inflated prices give consumers false purchasing power, leading to overconsumption of clothing, food and resources  contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, straining the planet's carrying capacity. This is the the major reason why there's excessive amount of waste generated in the system. Production is far exceeding consumption, recycle systems are inefficient and it's driving further strains on the planet. Because this is not a service based sector and today many such domains are earning quite the potential. Earlier it has been a key factor in impacting the planet and hence the medical costs that rose up. And yet there is neither carbon taxes, or carbon labelling nor people being aware about the impacts. But to an extent, the rises in medical & health issues became a significant factor in slowing that down, which again needed supplies and machinery to maintain. But it is interconnected. Technology, business, medicine, and the planet connectedly. Had materials been sustainable, or had the ecosystem not been fossil driven, or financially gamified to an extent that it became a power tussle, things would have been different. Neither there's enough recycling done. It's like drain the planet, monetize it, crap it out. And there's to be honest, more than enough for everyone. But no, it's all about ownership. Rentals, investments, would have helped people realize that a circular economy can't be with the linear disruption model we are in. Do you know that it is possible to reduce emissions while growing the economy. 1. Historically, there has been a strong correlation between CO2 emissions and economic prosperity. As countries become wealthier, they tend to emit more CO2 due to increased energy consumption, often derived from burning fossil fuels.    2. However, many countries, including the UK, have successfully decoupled economic growth from CO2 emissions. This means that while their GDP has increased significantly over the past few decades, their emissions have decreased.    3. Several countries, such as France, Germany, Sweden, and others, have also achieved this decoupling, with GDP growth and CO2 emission reductions being evident.    4. The decoupling between economic growth and CO2 emissions has become more pronounced since the early 2000s, with some countries even managing to keep total energy use flat or reduce it while growing economically.    5. One significant reason for the decrease in emissions is the shift towards using low-carbon energy sources, replacing fossil fuels. This transition has allowed for continued economic growth without the accompanying rise in emissions.    6. It is highlighted that the reduction in emissions in richer countries was not solely due to offshoring production overseas but rather a genuine shift towards low-carbon energy sources domestically.    7. The decline in the cost of low-carbon technologies has made the acceleration of decarbonization more achievable, raising the hope for a faster reduction in emissions globally.    8. In 2022, governments provided a total of $7 trillion in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. Those stats come from an IMF calculation, which includes 'implicit' subsidies: It captures the undercharging that occurs due to the environmental costs incurred by burning fossil fuels.   The first step to any credible plan to get our economy onto a sustainable path means removing those subsidies and internalising the costs of pollution - the polluter pays.   Making the polluter confront the cost of the damage they do to the environment would mean the price of fossil fuels goes up, and the relative cost of clean energy comes down, accelerating the rollout of clean technologies.   Who are the ultimate polluters? It's you and me. Fossil fuels are embedded in everything we do - the energy we use, the plastics we consume and the food and other goods transported from around the world to our supermarkets and stores.   How much should we pay to internalise the costs of our pollution and change our spending habits? Well if the IMF thinks the cost of that damage is $7tn per year, and we emit 38bn tonnes of CO2 per year, then the appropriate price is around $185 per tonne of CO2.   The chart below shows how much each country would pay per person, based on the CO2 embedded in their consumption today. - Middle Eastern consumers would pay on average $3.5-5.0k per person per year for their pollution - US consumers would pay $3k per year - Germans would pay $1.8k per year - Consumers in emerging economies would pay under $500 per year   Of course, this says nothing of social justice - transferring wealth from high to low income households and climate finance to support emerging economies and their consumption habits.   But is does help to highlight the scale of the adjustment - removing a $7tn annual subsidy would come with huge upheavals for the global economy. Unless we directly address the costs of the environmental damage, we are unlikely to move the economy onto a sustainable path.
