Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program @ Florida State University | Assistant Teaching Professor @ Florida State University | PhD in Economics
In my view, the two most important questions in economics are: 1. Compared to what? 2. What happens next? The first is about opportunity cost which is about comparing alternatives. The second is about incentives and tracing out the obvious and less obvious ways benefits/costs change and how that will influence behavior. This recent episode with dropping standardized test requirements and finding this leads to worse results (along different dimensions) is a great example of both. But, the one that sticks out the most is “compared to what?”.

I was a champion of seeing standardized tests dropped as admissions requirements by leading universities. My thinking was that test scores are highly correlated with, e.g., zip codes and household income, which they are. I thought eliminating standardized tests could help level the playing field. I was wrong. All the things I say above are true, but standardized tests are less biased against prospective students from underserved backgrounds than other measures. The research is conclusive on this point. So … bring them back!

Universities are trying to work to improve student attendance of lectures as many have low attendance post-pandemic. However, like with schools rather than completely losing the accessibility that technology brought into the uni experience maybe we need to think about evolving delivery. #academia #education #students https://lnkd.in/e2fvKQeA

Can you treat higher ed students as consumers? There's a tension between academic purity and student preferences, and it's a tough line to walk. Too far one way and you can debase the discipline you're teaching. Too far the other and no one wants to engage with your programme. Take some sage advice from Kyle Campbell, who takes a forensic look at what students really want and how different insitutes approach the thorny problem of the modern, consumerist student. #highereducation #highered #higheredmarketing https://lnkd.in/e7-FZWvR
