A post-October 7 surge in conversions? According to Haaretz, "rather than scare people away from Judaism, rabbis...are reporting an unprecedented spike in the number of people expressing interest in conversion, in moving ahead with plans to convert and in enrolling in conversion classes." URJ's Rabbi Julie Zupan spoke with Judy Maltz about the inspiring phenomenon: "We are hearing from our rabbis across America that they are being absolutely flooded with requests from conversion candidates," she says. "We were worried that our classes would be empty after October 7...even in the best of times, people exploring conversion tend to worry about what they might be inflicting on their future children. So it's pretty astounding to hear about so many people choosing Judaism now of all times." Interested in learning more about Reform Judaism? Death, taxes, and antisemitism. I’m sick of talking about antisemitism. I’m sick of talking to my kids about it. I’m sick of having to explain to people that, yes, it is antisemitic to hold Israel to a different standard than any other country in the world. Yes, it is antisemitic to accost Jewish college kids in the hallways, just because they are wearing a kippah. I’m sick of wringing my hands about it, day after day, as my daughter starts thinking about where she wants to go to college. It's hard to know where to start in thinking about the societal failures that led us to where we are. But let’s start with ignorance. Our kids are going to college unprepared. For the most part they are either woefully under-informed about the Arab-Israeli conflict or educated in a traditional "Jewish" setting that often fails to acknowledge some of the nuance in these discussions. The result? They get to college as deer in headlights, incapable of meaningfully engaging and calling out the bullshit when they hear it. Teen Israel Academy is looking to change that. It was inspired by my own The Wexner Foundation learning, from the incredible Keren Fraiman from Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago. Rarely have I encountered a teacher who can better engage on these tough issues than she can. So Della Heiman Goldkind and I, with the significant support of Greater Miami Jewish Federation, are launching a four-session course designed for Jewish Miami-Dade County 11th and 12th graders to dive into complex questions around Israel, anti-Semitism, the history of the region, Palestinians and the rest. Parents are given the opportunity to separately participate as well. Simply put – if you are a parent to a teen who cares about Israel and is worried about being Jewish on a college campus in 2024 and beyond, he/she should apply. Let’s give them the tools they need to thrive. The seminar is filling fast – application deadline is August 26 (available at www.teenisraelacademy.com). #antisemitism #education #college #teenagers #Israel #miami #jewish

📚 Truth and Reconciliation Week: Literature 📚 As we continue Truth and Reconciliation Week, we focus on the power of literature as a tool for understanding, healing, and growth. Reading stories from Indigenous voices offers valuable perspectives, allowing us to learn about the past and build a more equitable future. Books have the unique ability to transport us into the lived experiences of others, fostering empathy and deepening our knowledge. By engaging with literature, we create space for reflection and are better equipped to participate in meaningful reconciliation efforts. If you are looking to expand your understanding of Indigenous history, culture, and the impacts of residential schools, here is a reading list to get started: CBC’s 48 Books by Indigenous Writers on Residential Schools: https://lnkd.in/greeftBk Here are a few titles that also offer a great starting point: Orange Shirt Day: September 30th – Phyllis Webstad and the Orange Shirt Society examine the impact of Residential Schools, the rise of the Orange Shirt Day movement, and how individuals can participate in reconciliation. Killing the Wittigo – Suzanne Methot reimagines the effects of colonization and intergenerational trauma on Indigenous communities, focusing on resilience, healing, and systemic change for young adult readers. Shi-shi-etko – A young girl spends her last days at home treasuring memories and teachings from her family before leaving for residential school in a poetic reflection on loss and resilience. Join us this week in diving into these powerful works and taking meaningful actions for change. #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousLiterature #EveryChildMatters #ReconciliationThroughReading #SequoiaLegalLLP #SupportIndigenousVoices #IndigenousLiterature

Government schooling programs are indoctrination (as are all forms of education), but the difference is that the teaching emanating from these institutions is academically, morally, and spiritually detrimental to the children subjected thereto. Once this becomes a realization, the next step is a full-on push to get children out of these institutions either one family at a time or perhaps an entire faith community. It is not just about a family’s or church’s faith (although I would contend that this is the most important reason), but also about any conservative or traditional social or political position. I have placed a list of excellent books below that cover these issues in detail. 1. Education: Does God have an opinion: A biblical apologetic for Christian education & homeschooling. (Israel Wayne, 2017). 2. Crimes of the educators: How utopians are using government schools to destroy America’s children. (Blumenfeld & Alex Newman, 2014) 3. Tyranny Through Public Education (Cox, 2013) 4. Abolition: Overcoming the Christian establishment on education (Novak, 2014) 5. IndoctriNation: Public schools and the decline of Christianity (LaVerdiere, Editor, 2012) 6. Get out now: Why you should pull your child from public school before it’s too late. (Hasson & Farnan, 2018) 7. Dumbing Us Down (John Taylor Gatto, 2017) 8. Indoctrinating Our Children to Death (Newman, 2024) #HomeEducation #homeschool #homeschooling #education #GetOutNow #PublicSchoolExit #ChristianEducation #EdcuationIsDiscipleship #ChristianHomeschoolRevolution

From the archives... Teachers who take a stand against Critical Race Theory will almost certainly be ostracized, if not outright expelled, from the government schooling system. I praise these individuals for standing on principle, and I lament that their departures will leave fewer to fight for truly unifying changes. That being said, I do not believe that the government schooling system is reformable, and thus it is up to parents to take the bold, counter-cultural, and sacrificial steps of removing their children from these institutions of leftist propaganda. Children deserve better and Christian families must be encouraged to provide their children a Christian education. It is your duty according to Scripture, and for now you have the liberty to do so in the United States. Abdicate that responsibility and someday you will no longer have the freedom to choose how, when, where and what your children are taught. #HomeEducation #homeschool #homeschooling #education #GetOutNow #PublicSchoolExit #ChristianEducation #EdcuationIsDiscipleship #ChristianHomeschoolRevolution https://lnkd.in/gXHfPzx
