Receiving physical touch, whether from humans or animals, can reduce anxiety, depression, and pain. A meta-analysis of 212 studies found touch interventions like massage and kangaroo care beneficial for mental and physical health. Familiarity of touchers did not affect adults, but touch by parents greatly benefited newborns.
