Earlier this week, Fast Retailing CIO, Takahiro Tambara appeared on stage at NRF 2024, Retail’s Big Show, Asia Pacific. In his keynote session to thousands, Tambara described the UNIQLO transformation to become a Digital Consumer Retailer, explaining associated challenges and opportunities. Tambara emphasized it’s not a matter of always inventing new technologies. More often the key is to first innovate with what already exists to reveal new synergies. As UNIQLO works toward end-to-end management of its supply chain for greater visibility and control, RFID, and other digital ID technologies such as QR codes will have a role to play. For UNIQLO, the focus is on continuing to better connect technologies in pursuit of a perfect customer experience. Central to its transformation will be talent and partners with leading technology skills that can be applied at UNIQLO’s global scale. If that describes you, you’ll find roles available to help UNIQLO transform its business globally here: https://lnkd.in/gYZJhMcY #uniqlo #lifewear #powerofclothing #fastretailing #ariakeproject #uniqlotransformation #digitalconsumerretailer #customercentric #customersatisfaction #innovation #technology #globalbusiness

When it comes to adopting RFID, it still feels like many retailers aren't listening to what the world's leading retailers and brands have been saying for years. Stefan Otte, Vice President Global Real Estate & Partner Retail at Levi Strauss & Co, emphasizes that "there will be no future in retail without RFID." As CEO Mark Parker from Nike highlighted during an earnings call, RFID gives us the most complete view of our inventory that we have ever had. It’s quickly becoming the most precise tool in our arsenal to meet an individual consumer specific need at the exact right moment,” Carl Barker, VP, Global Omni Programs at lululemon, adds that RFID continues to elevate the digital experience by offering accurate real-time store inventory visibility and powering key fulfillment experiences. RFID is the foundational technology that will support businesses with data and insights to navigate the challenges in the retail industry. Adidas did it. So did Decathlon. And Marks & Spencer too. They all embraced RFID—but not in the way you’d expect. Here’s how. → Back in the early 2000s, RFID was hyped as a game-changer for retail. It promised automated checkouts, full supply chain transparency, and loss prevention. But it hit snags—things like interference from metals and liquids, plus a tough cost-to-benefit ratio for many businesses. → Fast forward to today: retailers are taking a smarter, phased approach. Adidas, Decathlon, and Marks & Spencer focus on specific business goals like improving supply chain visibility and reducing out-of-stocks. No more sweeping promises—just practical results. Key lessons? → Start with clear objectives: Companies that nailed RFID success began with a solid plan—whether it was inventory accuracy or shrinkage reduction, they knew their goals. → Take it slow: No one rolls out RFID overnight. Smart retailers start with trials, measure success, and adjust before scaling. → Seamless integration: RFID isn’t about replacing systems, it’s about enhancing them. Companies are working closely with IT to ensure RFID data fits into their existing inventory and POS systems. → Respect privacy: RFID can collect a ton of data, so companies need to be transparent and respectful of customer privacy. RFID isn’t just about tech—it’s about applying it the right way. Start small, stay focused, and use the insights to drive real growth. #RetailInnovation #RFID #SupplyChain #44NorthTech

This week, we covered various business topics such as Product Management, Services and Not-for-Profit Marketing, Pricing Decisions, and Distribution and Supply Chain Management. What really caught my interest was how UNIQLO handles its distribution. As an in-class task, we discovered that UNIQLO made a significant change in its distribution strategy a few years ago by adopting Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for every product. This clever use of technology transformed how they distribute products, allowing them to keep track of each item in real-time – from manufacturing, through wholesale, all the way to retailers. With RFID tags, UNIQLO now has a clear view of its inventory at each step in the supply chain. To be honest, whenever I went to UNIQLO, I was surprised by their amazing system. I wondered why machines recognized the products I put on the table even though they didn't read their barcode! I used to believe it was a kind of magic, but it's not at all! It was RFID! Seeing how they use technology to solve distribution challenges is truly impressive. Before taking this course, "distribution" was just a term I knew. However, diving into UNIQLO's strategy made me realize the complexity of it all. This research also highlighted how Information Technology (IT) significantly impacts industries. It's fascinating to witness how IT enhances efficiency and contributes to overall business success. As I continue my studies into next week and prepare for my final project, I'm eager to apply these new insights. The learning journey never stops! #BusinessStudies #DistributionInnovation #UNIQLO
