As a manager of IT teams at GE Aerospace, I've noticed that even the most talented software engineers can sometimes get stuck in a single pattern of thinking. To expand our problem-solving horizons, I introduced the team to the "Six Thinking Hats" method. This tool encourages viewing problems from six distinct perspectives, enabling a more comprehensive understanding. Initially met with skepticism, the team was soon pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of this approach. Among the hats, the Red Hat, which symbolizes emotions, proved to be the most challenging for them to adopt. But embracing this new way of thinking has led to innovative solutions and enhanced decision-making. I'm proud of how our team has adapted and grown through this process. Today’s commentary comes from Quality Engineer Kollin Petrie, who shares some strategies he uses to focus on transformation in his work. Kollin said, “During my time at Worthington Enterprises, I’ve been struck by a question our Transformation Manager, Solene Rivera Galarza, asks on multiple occasions, 'What is the problem we are trying to solve?' I think this question is wise because it helps us stay focused on what we are trying to accomplish. We often have a sense that the status quo could or should be improved, but until we name the actual problem and describe it in detail, it’s easy to veer off course away from the objective. We do a lot of things well at Worthington Enterprises; but also, we know the benefits of continuous improvement.
