Unlike traditional inboard engines, which require separate components for the propeller, rudder, and transmission, #the Zeus Pod Drive integrates these elements into a single unit. The drives are mounted directly beneath #the vessel, enhancing both handling and overall performance. The #maintenance and repair of the #Zeus system require precise engineering expertise and must be conducted with meticulous attention to detail. This is due to the intricate design of #high-speed four-stroke or two-stroke engines, where the complexity and friction between components significantly increase the risk of part #failure. Even minor malfunctions can disrupt the entire system. In the accompanying video, #extensive corrosion can be observed on the upper section of the #vertical shaft within the Zeus unit. This issue was identified during a #major overhaul, and although we replaced the defective front part to prevent further complications, this intervention led to additional expenses.

Once at the skylight, the crankshaft can be hoisted up with a large crane and placed on the quay. Ready for transport to our workshop to be grinded. 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡: 𝐂𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Cavitation often comes up in performance discussions about hydraulic systems such as pumps and ship screw propulsion. Pumps may shut down; ships' screw propulsion can be severely limited. But what is actually meant by cavitation? Cavitation in hydraulic systems is the formation and subsequent collapse of vapour filled cavities in a liquid. Formation of these cavities (bubbles) depends on the vapour pressure of fluid and absolute pressure in the fluid. The collapse of cavitation bubbles can be violent and loud. Excessive vibrations are also possible. Occurring close to surfaces it can lead to damage such pitting. In addition to causing damage, cavitation can cause performance issues such as efficiency and head loss. Although small scale cavitation can initially improve performance, higher levels of cavitation can degrade performance significantly, potentially leading to pipe blockage and damage. For ship screws, cavitation starts at the screw tip at higher rotational speeds and can extend further along the blade. In contrast with pumps, for screws the ambient pressure is the air pressure not the pressure in the pipe. This means that poor screw design or selection can quickly lead to cavitation.
