On the first day of the 119th Congress, Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Jared Golden (D-ME), Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), re-introduced the Let America Vote Act (LAVA), which would abolish closed primaries nationwide, ensure every eligible voter’s right to participate in every taxpayer-funded election, and prohibit noncitizens from casting ballots in federal elections. The Let America Vote Act would immediately grant nearly 24 million independent voters the right to vote in closed primaries — the single greatest expansion of voting rights in a half-century. Every eligible American, regardless of party affiliation, should have the right to participate in every taxpayer-funded election. https://lnkd.in/eQaxZCrp

Voting is one of the most important rights and responsibilities in a democratic society. It allows citizens to shape policies and laws that directly impact their lives, hold leaders accountable, and ensure that government reflects the will of the people. Local elections, which often have low turnout, can be especially important, as they influence issues such as education, law enforcement, and public health. Voting also honors the historical struggles for suffrage, reminding us of the sacrifices made to secure this right for all citizens. Every vote matters! By participating in elections, you help shape the future of your community, hold leaders accountable, and honor the struggle for voting rights. Whether it's a national or local election, your voice can make a difference. Make sure you're registered, and don't miss the chance to be heard! #Vote

CRSJ’s Perfecting Democracy Initiative recommends that all voters make a plan to vote before Election Day. Even for those who who have a good understanding of early voting, absentee/mail in voting, and voting in person procedures in the state where they are registered to vote, making a plan to vote can enable all voters to ensure that they meet important election-related deadlines and set aside the time to cast their ballot in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Before Election Day on TUESDAY, November 5, individuals can be adequately prepared to exercise their right and responsibility to vote by outlining their personal plan to vote based on their schedule, access to transportation, and other important considerations. To make a plan to vote, visit: https://lnkd.in/gXb-rNDM With mounting challenges to voting rights, CRSJ encourages participation in our Perfecting Democracy Initiative, a nonpartisan effort at the ABA to protect fair elections and the right to vote.

CRSJ’s Perfecting Democracy Initiative encourages all voters to be informed about the early voting procedures and opportunities in the state where they are registered. For those who may face barriers to accessing polls on Election Day — which is TUESDAY, November 5 – early voting can be a more convenient option that ensures all voters can exercise their civic right and responsibility to cast their vote in the 2024 presidential election. Navigating early voting can be complicated considering variations in procedures, requirements, and restrictions across different states. With recent changes to election laws, outlined in the Brennan Center’s 2024 Voting Roundup and previously highlighted by the Perfecting Democracy Initiative, it is more crucial than ever to stay updated on early voting procedures as the election approaches. In her latest article for The Conversation, Ash Center's Tova Wang points to some significant advancements in election and voting reform in states like Minnesota and New Mexico, and she highlights that grassroots organization is key to success. "In these states [Minnesota, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico], organizers were key to passage of new laws to expand the vote that can make elections more inclusive. Organizers are now central to making the potential of those reforms live up to their promise." Learn more about these efforts in her article here ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eHRHbMrP

There is much misinformation to wade through around the 2024 election, politicians and their campaigns, voting, policies and agendas. We need to hold up organizations & voices who are working for democracy. One such organization is The Center for Common Ground. They work to educate and empower voters of color in voter suppression states. From their website: The Center for Common Ground is non-partisan, Black and women-led voting rights organization founded in 2018. We work in states where more than 20% of voters are people of color – Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. We know that democracy works best when everyone is invited to participate in it. Unfortunately, there is a stark contrast in whose voices get prioritized in elections. At the Center for Common Ground our goal is to ensure every voter knows their voice and their votes matter. Collaborating with local partners, we strive to mobilize ALL voters of color, both those who consistently participate in elections and those who have yet to exercise their right to vote. Did you think fair maps were on the horizon for North Carolina ahead of the 2024 election? Think again! The state's gerrymandered electoral maps will not be rectified before the election because for them it "only" impacts African American voters in the most pivotal election of our lifetimes. 🤬. The impact of democracy's setbacks in North Carolina reverberates across the nation, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in safeguarding our voting rights. It's essential to note that North Carolina, a swing state, has seen significant shifts over the years, highlighting the need for fair representation. It's crucial to stay informed about the changes that can affect our fundamental rights. Kudos to Democracy Docket for their dedication to keeping us informed and engaged on critical issues like these. Stay informed and stay vigilant! Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/gDN672it

Voters across the country have the opportunity this election to say “yes” to #rankedchoicevoting, a sensible, simple #democracy reform I wrote about recently in the Chicago Sun-Times with my Campaign Legal Center colleague Alexandra Copper. #RCV As we wrote: "Efforts to make our elections more responsive to voters are gaining momentum, offering hope for a political system that better serves everyone. Enter ranked choice voting — a simple, yet important reform that can make our elections fairer, more inclusive and more representative of the people’s will." Full op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/evP6zFvg #RankedChoiceVoting is just one of the democracy-focused issues voters are considering this election. These ballot measures can have a huge impact on the fight for a more representative government. I wrote about many of these issues in the most recent edition of my newsletter. 59 years ago, the Voting Rights Act transformed US elections. Today, we continue the fight for voting rights by helping Americans overcome ballot box barriers created by voter ID laws. Read our latest blog here: https://lnkd.in/exE4btyQ

Happy primary #election day in #Missouri, #Michigan and about 10 other states. Did you know that in approximately 90% of our races, the low turnout primary election is the only election that matters? This is the “primary problem” that we are working so hard to solve with Veterans for All Voters — the lack of real competition in almost 90% of our General #Elections in November. We believe that ALL voters should be allowed to fully participate in ALL public, taxpayer-funded elections, and vote for ANY candidate, regardless of (private) party affiliation. *** This is called an open, unified (nonpartisan) primary election. *** Thanks to a few brave, bi-partisan members of Congress, there is a new Bill — the Let America Vote Act — to get rid of closed primary elections. Closed primaries currently disenfranchise almost 24 MIL independent #voters — many of whom are #Veterans, like me. We believe that if taxpayers fund elections, then those elections need to be fully open to all candidates, and all voters, regardless of party affiliation Learn more below and join our urgent, nonpartisan mission today! No eligible voter should be forced to join a private political party in order to participate in a public election. Onward!
