This program aims to delve into and honor the rich legacy, resilience, and economic prowess of these Black neighborhoods, which flourished despite facing immense challenges. Nationally renowned sites like Tulsa's Greenwood District and our local gem, the Rondo community, stand as testaments to the strength and innovation of Black entrepreneurship. Our discussion will unearth the historical significance of these vibrant economic centers, exploring their ascent and, regrettably, their tragic downfall. Yet, in recognizing the achievements of Black Wall Streets, we not only celebrate their triumphs but also spotlight the systemic hurdles and injustices that precipitated their decline. Hey y’all— if you attended a PWI or as I learned most recently it is now being referred to as a HWI (Historically White Institution) and you were either a part of the Black Student Union or your school (undergrad or graduate) offered a Black Grad Ceremony please chime and let me know: 1. Your perspective on being able to take part in a separate ceremony for Black graduates in addition to the school wide commencement; 2. If you know of any private HWI/PWI’s in the DC area that have Black graduate ceremonies. If you do not identify as Black would love to learn more on your perspective as well if HWI’s should have Black graduate ceremonies.

Why It Matters

In the quest to foster an educational environment where diversity is not just welcomed but celebrated, "What Schools Must Do to Retain Black Educators," published by Jalisa Evans and Black Educator Advocates Network, serves as more than a report—it's a clarion call for action and change. The dedication and insight of Jenny Perla, MPP, Miguel Perla, and the team at Digital Clientele have illuminated the nuanced challenges faced by Black educators in our schools. Their experiences, as captured in this study, are crucial for understanding the systemic changes required to nurture a culture of inclusivity and respect. Reading the report is just the beginning. I stand with my fellow educators and advocates in urging everyone to not only absorb the findings but also to engage actively in the dialogue.
