While I was working at LMW Machine Tool division, one sentence from my first manager, Mr. Thirumalai Kumar, changed my life forever.
I was a mechanical design engineer at the beginning of my career, and like many fresh design engineers, I would change the design of machine components based on my manager's comments.
Sometimes, I got irritated because my manager frequently changed the designs, and sometimes he would even ask me to revert to a previous design.
One day, I argued with him, saying, "I did only what you said. If you're changing the design a lot, it's not my responsibility."
He calmly replied, "See, Parthiban, most of the time in design, no one knows what the outcome will be. We try to visualize it in our minds. Sometimes, it matches our expectations, but often it does not.
Just because we get unexpected results doesn't mean we're doing something wrong. We're simply experimenting with another design that doesn't outperform our current one."
Even though I couldn't fully grasp those golden words at the time, as I gained more experience, I realized that those words apply not only to design but to many areas of life and have greatly benefited my business.
Now, I became more like him and started to implement more changes even though sometimes it worked better.
Now, my team members ask why I am always making changes and I remember him. 😁
Changes mean we are learning and upgrading something in the right direction. So adapt it!
