Today is a proud day for our UC team and I’ve been strongly encouraged to post about it!   Dr Etienne Borde and his PhD student William John Valentine recently won the world TTCP (The Technical Cooperative Program) Cyber Autonomy Gym for Experimentation (CAGE) 4 challenge.   This feat is a testament to the cutting-edge work carried out by UC’s Computer Science and Software Engineering team. Their success not only reflects their expertise but also underscores New Zealand’s capacity to innovate in cyber security and AI, on the global stage. This is the first time UC has entered this series of challenges which makes this victory even more impressive as each stage builds up on the knowledge of previous stages, pushing the boundaries of complexity and realism. The project, secured from the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), is part of an ongoing research collaboration between UC’s Wireless Research Centre (WRC) and the Defence Science & Technology (DST) arm of NZDF. This exemplifies the collaborative efforts between academia and defence organizations.  What we learned from this experience is that academics and students can gain much from participating in challenges such as these. It stretches their expertise and contributes to NZ’s technical knowledge base. About the TTCP CAGE Challenges: The TTCP (The Technical Cooperative Program) CAGE (Cyber Autonomy Gym for Experimentation) Challenges are a series of public competitions designed to foster the development of autonomous cyber defensive agents. These challenges simulate real-world cybersecurity scenarios, providing a high-fidelity environment for training and evaluating AI algorithms, including Deep Reinforcement Learning.
