Interesting piece by Mark Sandford in the Local Government Chronicle on how other countries have fixed local government funding 👇 Key themes: - a detailed process of needs assessment - more formal intergovernmental coordination - forecastable revenues - more devolved approach https://lnkd.in/eH2iDdPY.

Honoured to receive this certificate from the Australian Government, Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, for the 'Understanding Finances for Corporations' workshop. 📈💼 Learning and connecting with other Indigenous Corporation Leaders across the Northern Territory last month was an incredibly valuable experience. A key takeaway was the importance of long-term financial planning for the corporation's sustainability. 💹 #northernterritory #IndigenousCorporations #FinancialLiteracy #ProfessionalDevelopment"

Serious solid piece of work, as usual. One of the politically important take-aways to note: lower net immigration increases the fiscal burden, as the working/retired ratio changes. And here is the link: https://lnkd.in/eSJBcUN6

For those who have followed the ebbs and flows of financial advice reform over the past 3 years (or longer), many are just hoping for some kind of resolution or regulatory relief before the election circus. But the ticking clock should not mean due process and good government goes out the window. While it might be politically expedient, it is unacceptable in my opinion that industry associations and others sign non-disclosure agreements with the government effectively stifling free and public debate on issues of utmost importance to their members. Throughout this ordeal, the government has insisted on a facade of industry consensus about financial advice that frankly may not exist. It is time to let all stakeholders in the ecosystem - practising advisers, licensees, super funds, lobbyists, regulators and service providers - have a real, on-the-record discussion about the future of the profession and project to democratise access to advice. The Professional Planner Advice Policy Summit in Canberra next February will do just that. Join us.
The multi-year process to reform financial advice laws has been hindered by a closed-door, secretive process tightly controlled by public servants and industry lobbyists, including the unorthodox signing of non-disclosure agreements. The new Professional Planner Advice Policy Summit will bring the debate into the public domain, allowing all advice stakeholders to have their say in what should be a transparent and democratic policy development process. A big day with the release of the Finance and Expenditure Committee's final report on its Inquiry into #ClimateAdaptation. I was honoured to serve as Independent Specialist Advisor alongside Ministry for the Environment and Treasury, facilitated by the excellent team in the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives. My acknowledgements also to the committee members themselves who were wrestling with an incredibly complex issue. Select committees are such an important vehicle in the policy process – a place where deliberative democracy actually happens. In a diverse society like ours, I don't believe that the aim should be to reach a declaration of unanimity on such a complex issue, rather a narrowing of disagreement. We can at least rule out common evils, even if we can't always agree on the common good. This report isn't so much about determining outcomes, rather setting out a decision space that might have political durability over time. The next step is to convert this into a policy framework. On 27 August 2024, the German Federal Ministry of Finance published the draft for the so called Second Future Financing Act (Zweites Zukunftsfinanzierungsgesetz – ZuFinG II). This proposal builds on the First Future Financing Act, which came into force in 2023. Click the link below to read more on this topic.

A highly recommended read for all those with an interest in the place leadership potential of local authorities. It is clear that the systemic failings of the English local government, across both policy and finance, is holding back authorities from fulfilling their logical role as the key strategic curator of place and the primary agents of regeneration in their areas. Contained in the #PurposefulFinanceCommission's recent reports are a set of recommendations which, if taken forward, would boost capacity and expertise within local authorities, simplify funding mechanisms, streamline planning processes and lead to a reduction in the disparity in investment levels in different areas and prevent a deepening of this unequal footing. @Genecon would urge the present and future governments to take heed... #localgovernment #regeneration #placemaking https://lnkd.in/eEVWpz5C
