Message from Wham Khoha NZ Mercy Ship.
7 August 2024
Tēnā koe all,
Lately, I have reflected on our five-year journey as an organisation. Two major themes have marked us right from the outset of the YWAM Ships Aotearoa journey.
1—Extravagant Generosity: We were birthed through the donation of a ship. This koha spirit flows through everything that we do.
2—Innovation: Our team's need to innovate has been driven by necessity. We have developed an ability to pivot, which was the catalyst for the development of our NZ-focused dental programme, Trinity Koha Dental.
We find ourselves at another one of these pivoting moments. As I communicated in our last email, the departure of our medical ship for the Pacific is delayed. As a result, we have transitioned to delivering land-based clinics serving isolated communities in the greater Suva region.
We have confronted more obstacles than I can list, including getting the supplies into the country, medical registrations, housing and transport, to name a few. But I am astounded by what our team of volunteers has delivered in the last week and a half in the Suva region. At this writing, more than 800 people in three villages have received health services (dental, basic health checks, optometry and education) in partnership with the Central Division Health Team.
One highlight was having a team of three join us from OneSight Foundation, our eye-care partners. Working with our team and the Pacific Eye Institute in Fiji, they saw 398 patients in five days of clinics, all of whom will be blessed with glasses. Partnerships like this enable us to make a lasting impact in the communities we work in.
Next Steps
Yesterday marked a small step forward for our Ship Operation team. At 9 a.m., the YWAM KOHA threw her lines and slowly set out for Auckland. Although not the destination we had been preparing to sail to, it marked the next step and the adventure of operating our floating miracle.
Every time the ship sails out of Tauranga Harbour, it just feels like another testimony to the miracle power of our almighty God. The ship is scheduled to spend the next three weeks or so in Auckland to undergo some unscheduled maintenance. Then, we plan to send the KOHA to Fiji as soon as we can depart NZ waters.
This last week, as we prepared to deploy, we reflected on our aspirational purpose to empower a healthy future for the Pacific. People are the goal: healthy people, healthy families, and therefore healthy nations. The ship is essential in delivering our services to the isolated places of the Pacific, but the ship is not the end goal. It has been a good reminder.
All of this is only possible due to many layers of partnerships. Thank you for the part you have played in this journey of generosity, volunteerism, and innovation. Together, we are making a lasting difference.
Vinaka and God bless,
Marty Emmett
