My first post for a little while, as I have been settling in to a very busy (but extremely enjoyable!) Penultimate Year of Medical School!
Thus far I’ve achieved sign offs in Cardiology, Geriatrics, (Ortho-geriatrics / Major Trauma) and Acute Medicine. Now, I’m currently on my Haematology block - spending particular time on Leukaemia care.
This week in particular has been fantastic. I’ve been clerking new admissions (including Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia and Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia patients), spent time on the Ruth Myles ward, followed up ITU admissions, sat in on various clinics, helped our incredible nurses on our Chemotherapy Day Unit (achieveing sign offs in setting up infusions and IV drug administration).
But my favourite by far, was assisting in PA Sim-Ning Yee’s Bone Marrow Biopsy clinic. Not only did she run her clinic excellently and treat her patients with both kindness and compassion, but she also dedicated time to teach me. She taught me the theory and practicalities of sampling Bone Marrow Aspirate and Trephine, including how to prepare them on slides ready for analysis.
I was able to learn a great deal from Simmy; her communication skills in particular. We also spoke at length of the difficulties that the PA community is currently facing, and how the Medic-PA relationship is something to be celebrated, not fought against. Each have their role to play, with the end game of providing excellent patient care!
