Had the privilege of attending the #geoinno2024 conference in Manchester last week, where Erika Kraemer-Mbula delivered an inspiring talk on the "Twin" transition of green and digital innovation from an African perspective. My main take-aways: 💡 There is no “natural” connection between the two - their compatibility needs to be deliberately established and translated into action. Digitalization can come at the cost of sustainability, which in turn often relies on non-digital or indigenous approaches. 📍 This deliberation needs to consider aspects of justice and empowerment. A key aspect of sustainable digitalization is the democratic ownership and control over digital structures as well as data security. Especially in Africa, where hundreds of millions of people still remain off the energy grid, questions arise such as: ❓How can local communities be strengthened in their digital self-reliance and resilience? ❓How can deliberately chosen non-digital practises remain in existence in this context?
