All I see if posts about the #budget and how bad this is... Enough with the endless posts about feeling “traumatised” by the latest 2024 budget. The reality is clear: the public made this choice. In 2024, around 59% of eligible voters turned out, delivering an undeniable mandate to this government. Complaining now, after the fact, won’t change what you helped put into place. If you voted in 2024, this is the result of your democratic choice. If you didn’t, then complaining now is pointless. Instead of broadcasting your discontent, why not focus on making better-informed choices in the future? Happy International #DemocracyDay! 🎉 We so often use this word, #democracy, and so rarely think about its meaning. So, what do we at Democracy International e.V. mean when we say “democracy” and what do we want to celebrate today? 1. A meaningful #conversation is a foundation for functioning democracy. By engaging in #dialogue as #equals, we strengthen democracy. And of course, we believe that citizens are able to have a meaningful discussion on the topics important to them, and the outcomes of these discussions need to be taken into account. 2. #Elections alone do not make a democracy. Of course, we celebrate democratic elections. But we believe citizens have a right to be included in political decision-making more often than every 5 years. And democracy has so many aspects, it is not only representative one but also #deliberative, #participatory and #direct democracy. Direct democracy is meant to provide people with decision-making power between the election on topics of importance, not to undermine the representative apparatus. 3. Democracy thrives on #diversity. Democracy and direct democracy as well, are functioning when they are inclusive. Every person regardless of their legal status or any other factor should be able to make decisions about their life, including via exercise of direct democracy. 4. Democracy is worth #trusting. #Trust is the compound that binds the very fabric of our democracy. If we don’t trust each other, how can we be expected to make decisions with and for each other? 5. Last, but not the least, we celebrate the #basics of democracy! Human #rights, rule of law and political #freedom are the necessary foundation for functioning democracy. Without them, no democracy instrument or institution would work. Democracy is a complex process that needs constant attention and development. And we need not to forget to celebrate the wins of it, like today!
