The Easter weekend typically sees many homeowners and budding horticulturists venture out into the garden to start tending to the area, with the forecast for the weekend looking favourable across the UK. It’s also a time when #japaneseknotweed is in the early stages of development and can easily be mistaken for something a little less harmless, so I thought I’d share some advice and some photographs of what the early signs of Japanese Knotweed are. The advice: Firstly, do not attempt to dig it up. The plant's rhizomes can extend as far down as 2-3 meters, and even a small piece the size of a fingernail can cause it to spread further. Secondly, do not apply herbicides as they will not be effective during this time. Late summer is the optimum time for herbicidal treatment. Additionally, avoid disturbing any vegetation or flora within 3 meters of the visible growth, as the rhizomes extend outward from the main stand, and what you cannot see can be more of a risk than what is visible. Lastly, if you do spot Japanese knotweed, feel free to call for advice and assistance with your options. You can reach me at 07494 678440, and I’ll do my best to help.

The Day of the Red Rose🌹 Today is the Day of the Red Rose. A flower that represents love, loyalty, friendship and appreciation. A good time to share a few fun facts about the red rose: Did you know... 🌹Red roses have been symbols of love and beauty since ancient times? 🌹There are more than 150 varieties of roses worldwide? 🌹Trips is a major problem in rose cultivation? The last point is recognizable to SK Roses. Since 2019, they have been working with a biological approach for controlling thrips. They scatter montdorensis predatory mites with Powerfood feeding mites on the recommendation of Kees Kouwenhoven and Michael Visser. They do this with two Unimite Air bioblowers. Rose grower Bas Koene shares, “Good thrips control with the Bioverblazer allows us to deliver good quality roses year-round.” Find out how this approach saved SK Roses a lot of labor. More passion, more passion. More energy, more energy! Our Passiflora edulis ‘Possum Purple’ gave us more passion and more energy than last year and produced a few lovely fruits. This species of passion fruit is native to South America therefore only hardy in zones 10-12 so we keep it in our greenhouse over the winter. This plant can be trained up a trellis or used in a hanging basket. 🎥: Sarah D., Supervisory Horticulturist Video description: horticulturist standing next to a potted green vining plant pointing to round green fruit. #PassionFruit #SmithsonianGardens #BotanicalGarden

Being a horticulturist you may encounter FAQs of fig fruitlessness, crop failure or Delay fruit bearing. One of major issue may occur due to unique flower morphology in Fig pollination system, occurs inside the specialized syconium inflorescence (a fleshy, inverted structure with internal flowers Containing male and female parts in sac), is most effective at temperatures between 20-30 C . Fig wasps and bumble bees are essential for this process (They pollinate entering flower opening by sheding pollens with their thorax) , perform best at 24-28 C, navigating the complex structure to transfer pollen. In contrast, bumblebees, although not primary fig pollinators, show significantly reduced foraging efficiency below 15 C and above 30 C . In the absence of fig wasps, the fig fruit cannot develop properly, leading to poor fruit set and potential reproductive failure.#Figs #Pollination #Inflorsence #Horticulture #Agriculture #Temperate #USA #Canada
