Back a few hundred thousand years ago I was a Private in the California Cadet Corps. Moving through the NCO Ranks, then attending Officer Candidate School, ultimately achieving position and rank Battalion S3, Lt. Col. Of all the memories I have of this time, it was my field commission 5th BDE, 48th BN, CO (Captain Fox) Leading exhibition drill teams and Competitive Rifle Marksmanship Competitions that lessons latched on for a lifetime. Participating then Leading (squad leader then Cadre) in state championships for prone, off hand, and kneeling, in five-man, ten-man teams and individual competition taught me this: Focus on your target. Be patient. Breath. Be in the moment. Believe in yourself. Notice what your body is saying about your environment. Choose your best moment wisely. Don't push a bad position. You are in control. Let it play out. Be mindful. Understand probability and impact. Pass good knowledge to good recipients. Commanding a platoon during D&C (Drill & Ceremony) competition In front of thousands, taught me this: Preparation Wins the day. We are stronger in a unified group. Collaborate. Listen to alternatives. Understand defined methods and best practices. Listen to your Betters. Challenge them appropriately. Support each other. Champion situational awareness. Practice until its like breathing. Operate in lock step, flawlessly. Pivot together. Mind your cadence. Timing matters. Choose your battles. One of the platoon exercises I formulated and fondly recall: Standing at attention back to back, Count from one to sixty in your head at the same time as your platoon, and snap your fingers simultaneously at 60. Hit that cadence... *SNAP. First positive steps to becoming a dyed in the wool, effectual team.

And then we have this unbelievable performance from @marforcom. ❌The national is being carried lower than the org! ❌The female must tuck her blouse in on a color guard. ❌All must wear the white belt and waist plate. ❌Nats bearer's hand is too high on the staff. I've been told if I would just politely tell those in charge that certain adjustments need to made here and there I'd probably be listened to much more. Here’s reality: no one listens because no one cares until the fecal matter hits the rotating oscillator. All those "in charge" want to shove a bit of money in each corner of the command, have everyone do their job, and shut up. And that's exactly why this happens again and again. Here's another truth nugget: you send your ill-trained, unread team out to perform, especially colors, and everyone is elated with the job barely done, while in reality, people across the internet, who also don't read their manuals, think "that's the way we can do it!" and they go out and repeat your performance. Duplicate that now with their performance and double the amount of people who now repeat the performance. Use the most conservative numbers you can think of. Now double it again and again and again, and again! I know, you blame me for all your woes. This is your fault, leadership and Nats bearer, you are included in this. Lessons learned from my first field exercise as a Paladin Platoon Leader: 1) ATTITUDE ALWAYS WINS Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. When things inevitably go wrong, I have about 30 seconds to react in a positive or productive way. Pessimism and negativity are infectious diseases that the team may never recover from. When I react correctly, we can accomplish and overcome anything. When I don’t, a lot of effort has to be made to get back on track. 2) ASK GOOD QUESTIONS Perhaps the most unsurprising discovery of the exercise was that my lack of technical knowledge is grand. The only way to work through that was to rely on the years of experience in my NCOs, commit to checking my ego at the door, and asking the “dumb” questions. Uncovering answers to questions I don’t even know I have is truly an art form. 3) EMPOWERING SOLDIERS TO LEAD IS GOOD LEADERSHIP At the range last month I had one of my soldiers teach me how to assemble/disassemble a M240B. During this time he expressed interest in teaching a class to the Battery on the weapon system expressing a lack of training for the lower enlisted soldiers on all of our weapon systems. After getting back from the field this weekend, I told him I would find a slot in the training schedule next month for him to take charge of teaching all the weapon systems. From that point on, every time I saw him he was smiling from ear to ear. There are leaders amongst all ranks in the formation and I have a unique opportunity to provide them with the tools they need and empower them to grow in their leadership.

In 1975, a unique experiment at West Point Military Academy challenged a professional athlete from the Cincinnati Bengals who struggled with completing a single pull-up. This experiment focused on the concept of "negative work" - addressing the inability to do a pull-up by modifying the process itself. By reducing the amount of weight lifted using resistance bands, they facilitated the task at hand, highlighting the significance of tackling friction points in any process to enhance productivity. The essence of the experiment underscores the importance of addressing obstacles and inefficiencies to progress effectively. By recognizing and resolving issues that hinder progress, individuals and teams can unlock their full potential and propel themselves forward.
