“For our early childhood education community, #Juneteenth offers a beautiful opportunity to engage families and children in developmentally appropriate ways. We can share stories, histories, and the journeys that have culminated in these jubilant celebrations of freedom. Also, we can charge the next generations to continue carrying the torch of Black liberation and brilliance. “ Tonia Durden Thank you for sharing your story and your wisdom Dr. Durden. It is important that we continue to advocate for equity and justice in the early childhood education field. We continue to see oppression of Black, particularly women, through wage disparities and the devaluation of early learning and care. In Ohio approximately 1 in every 3 early childhood educators is Black, which is nearly twice as much as the population of Black Ohioans as a whole. With an average wage of $14 an hour for child care workers in the state, Black providers are disproportionately impacted by low wages and poverty. We can’t acknowledge these workforce issues without acknowledging they are deeply rooted in racial inequality and discrimination. We can do better. We need to do better. We have to do better. I’m beyond excited to learn that Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. is awarding mini grants to HBCUs and it’s organizations! This initiative is a crucial step toward increasing awareness, research and education about lupus within our communities. For those who are not aware, Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain and other organs. Unfortunately, it disproportionately impacts African American Women, who are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop lupus than their white counterparts. In fact, 90% of all lupus cases are diagnosed in women, however black women are inclined to experience more severe symptoms and far worse outcomes. These grants are an opportunity to foster education and outreach efforts in communities that are hit the hardest by lupus. Supporting HBCUs in this mission ensures that we uplift the actual voices within our community as well as empower future healthcare leaders to fight this disease. I’m personally counting on them 🫶🏾 Every year, I form a team and participate in the Walk To End Lupus Now 💜🦋💜 to support the fight. This year, my team and I were able to raise a little more than $3300 to assist the incredible work of the Lupus Foundation of America. It makes me proud to know that I’ve contributed in some small way to this initiative (If you’re interested in supporting or joining my walk team for next year please let me know). I love seeing how the Foundation uses these resources to drive change, raise awareness and support those of us who are living with lupus. Juneteenth is a momentous day in our nation's history. This day commemorates the moment when the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their emancipation. But it's also a stark reminder of the long journey towards racial justice that persists to this day. At A New Leaf, we stand in unwavering solidarity with our Black community members as we honor the significance of Juneteenth. We acknowledge that the struggle for civil rights and equality continues and are dedicated to being part of the solution. Juneteenth is not just a celebration; it's an opportunity to reflect on the systemic disparities that persist. We recognize that Black communities still face significant challenges in areas like education, employment, and housing. These disparities are a stark reality, and they deeply affect the lives of individuals and families. A New Leaf is committed to actively addressing these disparities. We provide critical services that bridge gaps, from educational support to employment assistance and affordable housing solutions. Our mission is to ensure that every person has the opportunity to break free from the trap of inequality, poverty, and other challenges. 🎉 As my birthday week reflections continue, and thanks to EVERYONE who has given me recommendations on their favorite history books, today I focus on another transformative event in our nation's history. I want us to remember the brave actions of the Little Rock Nine, a group of young Black students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas amidst severe racial tensions in 1957. In fact, the crisis at Little Rock escalated to such an extent that on September 24, 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower found it necessary to deploy the National Guard to enforce the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision from 1954. This marked the first time a sitting president had deployed federal troops to enforce civil rights since Reconstruction. At The CAFE Group, through our 1954 Project, we draw inspiration from such historical milestones to fuel our commitment to advancing educational equity through more equitable philanthropic practices. The project management industry, like many others, presents a myriad of obstacles for black women looking to enter the field. Systemic biases and stereotypes continue to create barriers for these talented professionals, hindering their progress and limiting their opportunities for growth and success. Despite their skills and expertise, black women face unique challenges and must navigate a landscape that often fails to recognize and support their contributions. But, with determination and perseverance, they continue to break down these barriers and make their mark in the industry. It's time for a change. #Juneteenth celebrates emancipation, but let’s be honest, America owes #BlackAmerica a lot more than a day off. There’s still a knife in the back of progress, holding Black communities back, generation after generation. Quality education is the key to unlocking the true promise of Juneteenth. We can’t talk about freedom without equal opportunity to learn and thrive. Emancipation freed Black people from physical chains, but segregated schools became new shackles. Quality education is today’s Juneteenth, the long-delayed promise of a level playing field. Politicians love to brag about “the American Dream,” but for Black students, it feels more like a recurring nightmare. Underfunded schools, biased curriculums, and a lack of resources keep Black students from reaching their full potential. This Juneteenth, let’s acknowledge the unfinished business of racial justice. Let’s confront the educational inequality that continues to hold Black America back. We need teachers, parents, and communities to fight for equity, not just equality. Let’s dismantle the systems that perpetuate the “knife in the back,” and build schools that empower ALL students to chase their dreams. On June 19, 1865, news of emancipation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, marking the end of slavery in the United States. This day, now a federal holiday, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of the African American community. While our students and staff are not in school today, we encourage everyone to take this time to learn, reflect, and honor the significance of Juneteenth. Here are some ways we can all engage meaningfully: 📖 Learn: Explore the rich history of Juneteenth and its impact on American society. Numerous online resources, books, and documentaries provide deep insights into this important day. 💬 Reflect: Take a moment to reflect on the progress we have made towards equality and the work that still lies ahead.
